was out last night shooting, had a very steep bank to climb.
selected 4wd low and off i went, top of the bank back into normal running.
off to do what i was there for and then time for the homeward trip.
top of hill select low, very, very stiff to engage.
i played around a bit and can select 4wd high and 4wd low but both seem very stiff to engage.............is this normal?.
not a major problem at the moment as it works as it should when selected but will it continue to work?.

What sort of disco do you have? My Disco 1 is sometimes quite stiff going down into Low Range but seems fine going the other way. I find i can get round it by sliding across into Difflock, up to low range, and then back across (although for climbing/descending a steep hill you should prob be leaving the difflock on)

97 300tdi,all works fine just a little stiff, but then again i am used to jap 4x4s.
i did what you do just moved it around a little until it went in,sounds like its a normal thing then?.

I suspect its a "getting old" thing - might be that the transfer bo needs lubricating tho. Compared to Jap 4 by 4s, landrovers are much better offroaders, but need far more TLC!!

Its always going to seem a bit stiff because you're physically moving lumps of metal around (not like new discos where you just press a button ;))

your right about being better off roaders,i tried to take pictures last night but it got too dark and didnt turn out, just wanted to show people where this thing could get to,i think i got the land rover bug now.

I find its much easier to switch between hi and lo box if the Disco is moving very slowly rather than being completely stationary

You'll prob also find that it works best if you engage neutral, release the clutch, engage high/low, press the clutch, engage gear. Hi-Lo doesnt require clutch to work if the car isnt in gear
