I couldn't remove the ignition key from my 97 300TDi auto the other night. I put it into park had my foot on the brake but no luck, to say the least it very frustrating. Started the engine again and ran through the gears but still no luck removing the key.
Then a flash of inspiration as I recalled only 20 minutes earlier I was using low ratio. It turns out that if the high low ratio lever is not fully into gear (as mine wasn't but drove ok) then the mechanical interlock that stops key removal unless park and footbrake are applied is also linked to the high/low ratio lever.:o
