The bus failed it's MoT on welding an play in the steering. The welding is not a problem, however the play is between the relay and lower lever. Does anyone know of the best/quickest way to fix this so I can get to Billing? We can fix it properly once we get there, but enought to get through a re-test will do for now. HELP!:( :(

I take it you mean the lever is loose on the splines ?
Method 1:
Take the lever off and clamp it in a vice, then run an angle grinder down the slot to widen it ( or hacksaw a thin slice out). This should allow you to clamp it up a bit tighter but it is only a temporary repair as it distorts the lever and they never seem to last long before they come loose again.
Method 2:
Loosen the clamp. Drill one or more holes about 5mm diameter vertically upwards so the hole is half in the shaft & half in the lever. Then put some steel bar in the hole, if you cant find any bar use the back end of the drill bit, then tighten the clamp. This should be a more reliable bodge, in effect you are making new splines, but I would still treat it as a temporary repair.;)

I have trained Fifi to watch the back lights on the Militant and operate the indicaters on the Land Rover to save me using a trailer board.

Went back for a re-test today. DAMIT! The welder had missed a couple of spots. But the stearing passed!:) In the end we took it off and used a hacksaw to open up the gap. It was mostly just dirt that came out, but some metal was taken off too. So it's back to the welder first thing tomorrow, then back for a re-test just giving it enough time to cool off. Third time lucky!
