We had a similar problem on a Chrysler PT Cruiser, if we disconnected the MAP sensor, it ticked over OK, connected it ran at nearly 3000 revs ( a petrol engine though).
It was the extra air/bypass solenoid that was at fault, it was jammed.
Just because one sensor alters the tickover, doesn't mean it is the problem. If you have changed 3 MAFs, it probably isn't that sensor. It's probably setting itself to default as the MAF is not sensed by the ECU.
Have you had it read for codes?

In many cases like this simply opening up every connection of the management system and cleaning all contacts and spraying with WD40 can help.
This link may be of help, I know they're two totally different vehicles, but it's a good explanation and pointer to some problems.
