My temp gauge gets to just under half way then never moves regardless! Is this normal?

How long does it take to get halfway? Are you saying that as soon as the ignition is switched on the needle moves to the half way position.
If it is a gradual move towards the half way point as the engine warms up then it sounds OK. If it rises straight away from a cold engine to the half way point either the sender the gauge or the themostat is faulty.

Doesn't sound like you have a problem, mine does the same :)

I have had mine for about 8 weeks now and done 6k in it, mostly at high end motorway speeds and once mine has warmed up it doesn't shift from that position. It makes me feel warm and fuzzy inside to know that the engine is looking after itself after the problems i had a few years ago with a 3.5 disco :D

I have the same problem except I know my temperature gauge is not working properly. I ran my 1998 Discovery with no water in it until it shutdown from overheating. Temperature gauge showed just under 1/2 way in the normal range and never moved.
I replaced the temp sender, temp sensor, and thermostat and the same is still happening.
After reading other threads, I see that temp sensors have been known to be bad brand new out of the box. I am going to replace the temp sensor again and see that happens.
Anyone know how to test the temperature gauge? How do I make the engine run a little hot so I can see that reading on the instrument panel?
Thank you.

Try placing a piece of cardboard or carpet in front of the radiator to stop or inhibit the air flow, this usually works.
