got a 2000 5 door xi 1.8 freelander about ten weeks ago. all has been ok but the other day when checking under hood i noticed my header tank was empty i topped up and went on my way. next day as left drive i noticed a line of coolant on road. when checked i saw that at left side of air filter box half way down engine (to the right of a thick water hose) but on engine small drips of water running down towards starter. i parked up got run to moter factors for k-seal and water loss stopped and has been ok for about week so far. was the water loss the start of hgf? could the k-seal be a permanent fix or what should i do?. also i marked the position of my rad fans about five days ago and they have never moved should they? my temp gauge has never been above just under half way. hope someone can make sense of this and give some advice (as would like to keep it as first landrover and love it)

Check for water in the oil. Sounds more like a leak than anything major. My temp gauge like many others never moves from just under half way. I am told by everyone that this is perfectly normal also my engine fans rarely cut. Infact they only seem to cut in if I leave it running standing.
I have also done the Land Rover modifications to my cooling system which includes a new remotely mounted thermostate housing in the coolant hoses in the front and removal of the old thermostat in the rear.

thanks rob. oil is ok. im not sure whats what with mine as far as i can tell there is no thermostat at rear in mine. is it about 3/4 size of coke can cream in color and has one coolant hose in bottom and two at top if so mine is at left hand side of my rad about half way down just at front and below air filter box. so not sure if had mods done or still needs it.any ideas.thanks petedoc

You have a modified thermostat fitted.

Check that big pipe, it is a rubber hose joined to a metal pipe that goes around the back of the engine. Just at the bend there is a bleed screw, make sure it is tight and the rubber o ring hasn't perished, they leak.
