Hi All again
Is it possible to remove the propshaft and run on fwd if so will it do any damage if taken off.
Also will it stop the groning noise.
Many thanks

I dont know about stopping the groning noise but its ok to run a freelander without the proshaft. Lots of people do.

If the "groaning" noise goes away when you remove the prop then I suspect that your VCU support bearings are "bushed". Replace asap.
Be aware that you need to inform your insurance company if you make your F/L front wheel drive!!

if theres a problem with ya VC if will stop you damaging it further, apparently ive heard of people getting better mpg and being able to pull away quicker.
Also you will most likely get less mmm travelling noise i.e groaning etc
Hi All
My prop will be removed on thursday so i will give you the verdict on thursday evening.
Many thanks

I agree with Methos, I think they are much nicer to drive with the prop removed and the mpg is better.:)

Hi all,
interesting reading... i have too say i have had some woo's in the past with my freelander, i actually bought the car 2 years ago this coming january, and it came without a prop! as in full lot missing.
1) the answer to the question about M.O.T No the prop doesn't cover the prop, as far as the testing station is concerned is that the car can be roadworthy and safe, the prop missing does not effect this!.
My only gripe would be, after buying the car i had allsorts of problems, based on having a full recon prop fitted, Not at first may i add it seemed there were no defects when fitted, since then in the past year,
*Cracked chassis
*Replaced VCU ( viscous bearings)
*replaced diff mounts
and up until last month had to re replace the VCU because all in all the recon unit that i originally got the VCU seemed to be the route cause of all these issues.
So since the new Recon VCU has been fitted, i have to say... its literally like driving a new car,
Went to derbyshire the other day put £35 quid in the tank and managed overall to cover 240 miles. i was amazed.. it is the 2.0di model. all by changing the VCU. or 47mpg
So, i need to ask the question about taking the prop off, i understand the whole minimising budget thing and reducing spending cash on the car, but for me having a freelander is about having a 4X4, not 2 wheel drive car that looks the part.
Yes i could have stumbled at the first hurdle and decided to take the car back to the dealership(second hand that is), but i genuinely like the car and i feel it unjustified to lable it a second rate vehicle by not repairing it.
i may however decide to sell if it encounters more prop problems.
Any thoughts about this?

interesting reading about the propshaft, check your sums I get closer to 40mpg from your figures. How do you find the Di generally, did you try a TD4?

I was getting over 40+mpg before removing my prop, haven't done much miles yet to work out what I'm getting now....
I would rate the Di engine as a finely tuned "tractor" compared to the TD4, but just like a tractor they just keep going and going (he says as the ass falls out his Di engine :p )
Its maybe not as smooth or technically advanced as the Beemer engine, but it doesn't suffer from the niggles the TD4 seems to be plagued with. And the gearbox isn't made of cheese either.
One things for sure it pulls like hell!!

hi Gary,
Not tried the td4 to be fair, love the car in general, however just found a vibration tonight, based on part worn 6.5 mm treads i had put on.
if i use 26lbf of air in each front tyre the vibration is apparent, however if i inflate them to 30lbf, it has gone.
the freelander never ceases to amaze me (still like it though!)
yes your right about the cars MPG i based it on 5.5ltrs pg (why did i???) not 4.5..
whats the recommendations of the TD4 then??
but in that case i was doing even less before the VCU fitted....

I like mine too, but I'm thinking of getting a diesel and don't know if the extra expense of the TD4 is money well spent or not? It's much more refined and smoother and accelerates much better then the petrol where the old Di is about the same.

well....
My brother had the 1.8 petrol, and wasn't over impressed as he bought it from new in 2003, it had had 5 clutches and 1 head gasket renewal, (landrover paid for).
as for the di, engine wise, Brilliant, yeah you can stick the toe down and give it some power, but why would you rag it round. i find it responsive powerful, easy to drive.
My wife drives it most of the time and she absoultely loves it.
I know what your saying about the Td4, uses more juice, nice to try one, but more than happy with the di.

Can anyone advise me the best way to remove the front bearing mount from the shaft please?
I have removed the whole shaft and vcu and am having a nightmare removing the shaft from the vcu.
I have broken a chisel trying so I removed the joint and hit the 17mm bolt hoping it would push the joint away but its solid.
Would it be easier to take it to a garage and ask them nicely to do it for me?
Regards
Paul.

Nick.p............Re: your remarks about vibration.
You mentioned inflating your tyres from 26lb to 30lb and the noise disappears.
According to my handbook, albeit for a TD4, the tyre pressure across all models is 30lbs.

Paul
Are you driving a wedge between the end of the prop and the nut on the VCU?
Talldavey
Correct. LR upped the tyre pressures to 30psi across the range not long after the car was introduced. Still applies, and personally I find it makes a huge improvement.

Hi mate.
I tried it with a chisel and the ****** broke.
I have taken the UJ apart as I was struggling with the chisel but its solid!!
Is the wedge something I have to buy from land rover?

Hi, i just had a complete nightmare with my freelander! i drained the ird box only to find that the filler nut was completley seized! i got my friend round to get some heat on it and it still wont budge! Im having to drill a hole in my blanking plate to create a new filler bolt! Also upon removing my propshaft (which was easy!) a lot of gear oil came out of the back so i think my rear diff has a leak! another job! Also when i took my skid plate off i found i have an oil leak on the engine! I love my freelander and hopefully it should be ship shape with these problems fixed. I have the 2.0ltr diesel xedi model and it pulls great! it sshould be even better with the prop off! I'll keep you posted when i can finally drive my beast again!

hi i have just bought a freelander 1999 petrol.....took it into one of our fields and got stuck..had to tow it out with our 90. The rear wheels span, there was no drive from the front wheels. Is this a fault or I have heard that some people remove a prop shaft to aid fuel economy. How can I check?
TEMPL4R
22nd Nov 2008, 20:50
That's a fault. It's a front wheel drive car with a drive to the rear.
If it doesn't make funny noises when you drive and turn, I'd start by looking at the driveshafts where they come through the front hubs, then the CV joints, but they would make a noise.

Hi, we only have rear wheel drive. Do you know if this is a fault or has the propshaft been removed.
TEMPL4R

Prop will be there, it is driving the rear wheels.
Have a look at the front hubs first.

hi, what do we look for on the front hubs
TEMPL4R
22nd Nov 2008, 21:41
Get it stuck again and see what is and what isn't turning at the front.
I'd put it on a 2 post ramp at work and look while someone went through the gears and check the usual places they fail.
IRD and noises, CV joints, driveshaft splines ( usually) etc, etc.
