hi guys, i just bought a discovery tonight im not sure what model it is yet but its a 1993, 2.5 tdi, its raised by 3 inches and has quite big chunky tyres on it paid £350 for it, got tax but no MOT.
Ive had good look over it, and found 2 small holes to weld up, the handbrake doesnt work at all feels as if the cable has broke (if it has a cable).
I also noticed a clicking noise from the O/S/F wheel when turning,it is also all over the road when driving, feels really light
But my main concern is that when i tryed to get up a hill at the local quarry in low ratio, or high ratio it would get someway up then start spinning front wheels, i think the rears are driving though because some bits i was going up it really should have spun the fronts. i does feel as if the 4 wheels are driving when im going up hills, i was just quite suprised it didnt get up the one i was trying.
Any help on these probs would be great, ill post pics of it 2morrow, great forum uv got here, got a few answers about other things from searching.
Thanks

Sounds interesting though if I were you I would take it straight down (on a trailor) to an independent land rover specialist for a health check.
the fact that it handles like a bag spuds my be due to all the bushes being rotten, the dampers being shot and the springs dead.
Check that the 3inch lift was properly done and make sure there is a double carden on the front drive shaft...if it not then it might be worth investing in one to help with acute angles.
As for front wheel spinning...being in high and low ratio will affect the torque speed though to lock the diffs you need to push the lever (high low ratios) to the left (in either high or low). This will lock all 4 wheels and enable you to crack on up the hills (subjec to the tranny not having been blown apart). To flick it into "diff lock" its safer if you are in neutral and at a stand still, this way you wont crunch things. Make sure that you take it out of difflock when you dont need it or else you will trash the tranny.
I'd be interested top see some pics...

Stevie,
what part of the country are you in??
I wouldnt worry about the spinning front wheels so much, as has been said you just need to use the difflock everynow and then.
The clicking when turning sounds like a cv joint could be on it's way out. It's a bit of a drawn out job but fairly easy if you take your time. If you've never held a spanner in your life, go and buy some and a workshop manual ;)
The handbrake does have a cable and it's possible that the cable has snapped or it's been disconnected. get a torch and have a good poke around the transfer box.
good luck with your new toy

Thanks guys im near edinburgh in scotland, the lift kit is only 1 year old, i got the receipt amongst other things, i didnt know about the diff lock so thats that problem solved, my steering problem i think is the steering box im going to adjust it a small amount and see if it gets any better, im going to get a manual next week sometime, im a mechanic to trade and have all my tools still so fixing it isnt a problem, ill keep everyone posted, im going to buy the kit for the CV joint and get it done soon as.
Its booked in for MOT tomorrow so we will see how that goes.

Thanks, im worried about what its going to need, hopefully not to much.
Anyone know if i can get different front lights or something, as mine just dont cut it at all.
Also there is quite a loud bang when i first put it into 1st gear and start driving, just as the clutch starts to bite, it also does it when staring to reverse, its only when i 1st pull of though.

Hi,
If you're talking about the standard headlight bulbs behaving like Toc H lamps, you can get pretty cheap halogen or xenon bulb replacements from halfrauds. I got some 12v 60/55w xenon 'super brilliance' bulbs for about 14 quid a pair. I dare say they're not as good as some of the ones that cost 20 or 30 quid, but they're damn bright all the same. There's no comparison with the standard bulbs.

Right i took it for MOT today, it failed :(.
Its mainly all welding, the n/s inner wing is rotten, the boot floor is really bad, and two small bits on both sides just under foot wells on the sills, and a side and numberplate light inop.
I started welding the inner wing tonight, doing not to bad was a nightmare getting the screen wash bottle out, but ill get there.
Only 1 question 2night, can i buy new out riggers for the front??
If not ill have to attempt to weld them, but it looks really hard, and im not a great welder.

Hi there, I had to do the bootfloor on my wife's tdi 200 and I got the parts ie boot floor and crossmembers, from these people:
