Thanks to everyone who helped when I asked about replacing my auto transmission. I now have the Disco 300tdi, 1996, back on the road and tried towing horsebox with it, to find it lacking power and putting black smoke out, (normal driving, the car is a bit sluggish), the box is heavy and our 2 horses are big lads, but I expected it to tow better, so I think I've got a problem. Any suggestions where to start?????

When did you last change the air filter? Is the turbo whistling (popped or split hose or intercooler).

Yup, the turbo does seem to be whistling, what does this mean?

As Swingle says, start with the free, cheap and obvious stuff, check the air filter element and all the hoses are not loose or split.

If they did anywork on the engine or took it out, check the boost sensing pipe from the turbo to the injection pump goes to the top of the diaphragm cover, not the side of the pump.

Thanks again, I did all the work myself and I think it's been my own boob! Checked the hoses this morning and found one to have lost the jubilee clip and had popped(I probably didn't tighten it, 46 years old and still learning!), new clip and better performance, going to pull horse trailer this afternoon, so hopefully it'll do this as well.
