Hi all,i was having a chat with a friend about going touring in a couple of years for a month or so and the following question came up.What if you went on a trip for over a year, how would you re tax/mot and insure your vehichle without coming back?.I know you could probably phone up and re insure but without mot you cant get tax and without mot and tax insurance would then be invalid.Iknow i'll never get to go away for that long but would love to know if theres an answer.

You would have to tim it so that your tax ran out just before the MOT and you could re tax over t'interpipe but that would still leave you with the MOT problem. Only one way to get around that I'm afraid.

If it's just a month or so you're going away for and that's when you're tax and MoT expires, surrender (SORN) your vehicle excise licence one day (end of a month) and re-tax again for a full 6 or 12 months which will cover the period away. There's surely nothing wrong with getting an early MoT before you leave.

For longer periods away, depending what countries you visit and how long you stay for, you may have to purchase an equivilant to our vehicle excise licence in that country anyway and have your vehicle tested for roadworthiness.

You can MOT it when you like, as AJ says, it can be done early and you can have a 13 month MOT, but it can only be done within one calender month before the due date.

You can't legally take a vehicle out of the UK for more than 11 months.

The DVLA produce a form V11 which is sent to you when your VED is due for renewall.
Turn it over and read the pink square of writing.

You could of course have your vehicle tested jusy before you leave, whit hmore test than VED. Then you could get somebodyat home to get the VED for you, then you would only be out of MOT. Note what Chris has said about when you can apply for MOT

The DVLA is tightening up all the time. If you apply for a Carnet de Passage I believe the DVLA are aware of the Carnet being issued.

I had my tax disc checked out of ZA into Namibia at both sides of the Orange River border post.
I had to explain in detail to a South African copper how the UK system works at Martins Drift border post going into Namibia.
I had my VED disc checked at a police road block in Namibia.

Insurance wouldn't be a problem. In the EU as long as you still pay your policy money it would carry on. Well mine did on TP only, even though it wasn't neeeded. Out of the EU you pay for insurance at the border. In some countries TP insurance, For damage to people only, is on the price of fuel.

So the answer to your question. You export the vehicle. Then the real fun starts.

Thanks for all your replies everyone, though i think ive come up with a solution.I forgot that another friend of mine has a 101 camper and is from ireland which is mot exempt, and some one has mentioned that french cars have a 2year mot (not sure thats right though?).If so like mmgemini said export the vehichle and register it in another country whose rules and regs arn't as strict as here.

many thanks craig

Only problem I can see is when you try to Import it back again. You can't use it without a new MOT, you will need to keep the headlights lights and things to put it back to RHD spec.

One step forward and two back. Go with Mike on this one, he does a lot of worldwide travel, he knows as much about it as anyone.

we used to do this with our overland trucks as they would be out of the country for more than a year - as long as you book your landy in for a mot on the day you get back to the uk, you can i belive drive your vehicle to a testing station without a mot as long as its is booked in in advance, then if it fails you can then drive it back home and onto your drive. we used to drive from dover to ipswich and then back to our workshop. :D

But make sure you go directly to the MoT station, and don;t stop!

I was chatting to the service manager in my local LR dealership this week funnily enough, about Mots and stuff.

He said that another customer had got prosecuted by the police for stopping at a papershop and buying a paper on route to get an mot, the police did him, as you're supposed to go directly there, not use the vehicle for anything else, be it transporting goods, passengers, or getting a paper.

with ANPR on most large police cars now, all they need to do is drive past you and you numberplate will get pinged, and that's it.... blue lights, you're nicked sonny!

It's always been like that, the same with Trade Plates, only to the destination or a customer to test drive a reasonable distance to appraise the car.

We now have to ensure the vehicle registration is entered in the MOT booking, owners/drivers name only is not acceptable.

Its a big headache for overlanders when they intend traveling for more than 12 months. most just Sorn then carnet getting insurance of roadworthey checks when needed.

Turkey you buy on border green card but no need for tax disk.
Iran no need for anything.
Pakistan insurance not needed especialy as the maximum payout for death is $300 and when you see the conditions of vehs then there you go.
India insurance $40 no need for mot LOL
Australia get a rego check wipers lights ect then buy tax for the year $200 that includes liability insurance.

One thing you need for all the countrys is the blue V5 as well as the carnet the problem is that iff you export it in accordance with the DVLA you loose the V5 so problems start at the borders "wheres your carnt & V5?" Oh DVLA has the V5 "GOODBY" LOL

What to do the thing with English is that we trie to follow all the rules to the letter just go with the flow until the APNR guys get you on the way back LOL

but the two impotant parts of paperwork are V5 (complete) & Carnet de passage (ADAC is the best in my opinion)

Sorry to be stupid, all new to me - what's the Carnet thing? ADAC??

INTERESTING about buying insurance at the border - I was going to buy International insurance in the UK. My real problem is, car registered in Belgium to ANOTHER guy as I still haven't officially imported it into Poland, though I could do - but I have a receipt from him. Not sure if UK international insurance company would insure a British guy in a Belgian car going to Middle East??

Be very careful with ADAC You are supposed to have the Carnet issued by the people in the country where the vehicle is liscenced.....For those in the UK that means the RAC.

Just looking at the RAC site about Carnet's

I see Egypt has the highest valuation requirement at 800%. Does this mean you have to give the RAC 8 times the vehicles worth in deposit?
