Just got back from France all safe and well, Td5 howled its way up the auto routes with out missing a beat. Noticed a rumbling noise that I could feel on the floor pan, it went away before I could trace it. It came back so I started looking (lots off odd looks in a Super U car park!) Found the noise and vibration from the ACE Valve block, lying under it I can hear it’s a Hydraulic noise with in the system. The Pump is quiet and there is plenty of fluid. Fluid very black.
Any Ideas??

Look for a piece of grit jammed between the valve block and the chassis.

I have the same problem, but it sounds like its coming from the front right, and I can feel it through the accelerator, I think its air in the system.

Just read the workshop manual, the valve block is mounted on rubber bushes to stop Hydraulic noise from the valve block transmitting through the chassis and body. So grit could be the cause, but the noise is not always there when running. Will check as soon as I get a chance.

The lump of grit is quite common, and usually makes it vibrate at 1100-1300 odd rpm.

Ok thanks for that jon, I will check ASAP, not seen the disco today but probably will tomorow.

Right no grit, or stick or anything jammed between valve block and chassis, no noise when I looked yesterday. Sometimes dose it, sometimes don't. I picked up an ACE filter saturday morning, it sits in the bottom of the valve, need to get some fluid and i'll change that- see if it makes and difference.

Mine was noisy when I bought it, a bottle of Lucas Power Steering Stop Leak and it is now not at all noticable.

I did confirm with Lucas if it was suitable for use in the D2 before using it.

It does depend on where the leak is coming from, if it's a leaky seal, in most cases it will work plus it makes the steering smoother and quieter. Lucas offer a money back guarantee that it will work, I have sold hundreds of bottles and had 2 warranty requests, both turned out to be leaking from a corroded or perished pipe!

You simply have to remove some PAS fluid to allow room to pour the bottle in, on my D2 I used a large 1L bottle, half in the PAS and the other half in the ACE, it stopped the ACE whining within a few miles.

I also used the Lucas stop leak in my TD5 PAS. It still leaks a bit but the steering feel is way better.

I Have finaly got round to doing somthing about the noisy ACE, i have got a new ACE filter from main dealer. When I change this shall I just top up the system with the leak stop stuff instead of PAS fluid? How much did you put in yours?
I'm guessing you must be Jim of JGS 4x4 on ebay, if so hello i'v purchased some bits off you already, EGR removal kits ect, you might be sending me some leak stop soon!

:) That's me!

Don't forget to ask for a discount before paying......

No harm in asking:D

I used a suction thing to empty both the ACE and PAS reservoirs and topped up with the Lucas steering stop leak, I did not have a leak but had a very noisy, groaning, whining ACE system, this stopped the noise in a couple of days.

A large bottle is just enough to refill both reservoirs.
