View Full Version : Diff needs to be selected to drive- correct?

I have been helping my son replace the engine in hi 98 Discovery TDi. We are a couple of newbies and he has recently been deployed (RAF Reservist) so I'm left to finish what has become a nightmare of a job. I have just refitted the gearbox for the second time. First time their was no drive after we had fitted a replacement engine. The likely culprit was the clutch plate being fitted the wrong way round (you live and learn) Now I can get drive but only with the diff gear stick selected. I had only drove the Disco twice before we had to replace the engine (Oct 08) and we are still not roadworthy (could only work some weekends) so I’m unsure exactly what position the diff gear stick should be in

Anyway I have to presume that the diff lock gear stick should be in the neutral position for normal driving and if this is the case what could be the problem if the Disco will only drive with the diff lock selected?
Thanks in anticipation
Dave

Normal driving the small lever is in High, Low for when needed. Neutral is for using a power take off or similar device. ( or towing a 5 speed )

Push the lever to the left for diff lock, only when the situation arises.

If it will still only drive with the lever over in diff lock, put it back into normal drive position ( to the right ) and get someone to try to drive while you see if a propshaft turns. That would suggest a problem with a halfshaft, a diff or a hub flange.
