Hi.Me an my whife planning f0r spring 2009 adventure to Crimea.
<<The Crimean coast lies on the far side of the Black Sea from Turkey. Stunning mountain scenery, warm sea and a long season of summer sunshine have made the Crimean coastline the riviera for Ukrainians and Russians since the time of the tsars.

The russian and ukrainian name for Crimea is Krym - pronounced like `cream' with a rolled letter `r'. And it really is the cream as a holiday destination.

Steeped in history, Crimea is a fascinating region to explore, as well as a great place to relax. Across the centuries it has attracted settlers such as the Greeks, the Venetians and the Genoese - all of whom founded cities along the coast and inter-married with the local people. The western terminus of the Great Silk Road was on the Crimean coast. After a long period as part of the Byzantine empire, it was overrun by Chingiz Khan's Golden Horde and remained a Tatar Khanate until annexed by Imperial Russia in the eighteenth century. This rich history is still alive today in its fabulous palaces and historic sites, and in the culture and way of life of today's Crimean people.

Now an autonomous republic within Ukraine, Crimea is busy re-inventing itself after the ending of the old soviet union. Private enterprise is flourishing and well-stocked shops and good restaurants are the norm. Transport and accommodation are cheaper than the mediterranean resorts but the weather is better and the sightseeing amazing!
Visitors from western europe and further afield are welcomed in a country which has opened its doors to foreign tourists by reducing visa requirements to a minimum.

Crimea lies in the same latitude as Venice, and its summer temperatures are similar to those on the French and Portuguese Algarve mediterranean coasts. Although it's so much further east, it avoids the high humidity experienced by parts of mainland Greece and Turkey in the summer months because of its position as a near-island in the Black Sea. Fresh sea breezes ensure that the high summer temperatures don't become uncomfortable.
Crimea has two seasons - the warm / hot season, which lasts from May through to October, and the cool season running from November to April. Rainfall is light , averaging around 1 inch (38 mm) per month in summer and 3 inches (83 mm) in the cool season.
In the warm / hot season temperatures rival those of the mediterranean resorts and the average sea temperature in summer is 23ºC. Swimming begins in earnest in May and continues through to the end of October.>>

We have disco 200tdi 94.

Hello Leos

So u want to go Odessa via Poland? or direct to Crimea?

It's a long drive but it is possible!

I may b up 4 a drive to Odessa next spring but I will need a co-driver to share the driving.

Taking a southern route is on normal roads so no trouble I think?

There is a visa/passport issue with the country beginning with M (moldolva?) so best avoid if poss. Ukraine no visa required now for eu PP holders.

I am not sure i would call that road from the border to Ternopil normal...? bloody lethal i would call it , full of pot holes and ruts...Mind you , i was on a Harley motorcycle , i dare say its a bit better in a Landrover....On the plus side the food , beer and people were wonderfull , and i would definatly go again , besides i have a date with the lovely Nataliya....!
