Cool trip out there! I have a friend working in Novosibirsk (Siberia) so could email them for latest fuel prices etc nearer the time. Don't think fuel too much of a problem. From what they say roads are BIG problem and driving standards are well dangerous, a friend of a friend lost her mother in a crash in E.Russia so bit of a sore issue. Should be OK in Defender, advise travelling in more than one vehicle just in case...
Could join u in Northern Europe to Siberia section if time allows;-)

What you really need to do is get yer backside up to the Royal Geographical Society (http://www.rgs.org/HomePage.htm) in London.
A lot of people who do expeditions submit the details and they get stored in their libraries.
You'll also find the best maps available up there to look at routes etc.

Yeah, could do that, but it takes the spirit of adventure out of it. Far better to get road maps and compass ;-)

no harm in doing some ground work first. maps are a good place to start , learning basic words in russian might also be a good idea.;)
