It's really hard to guess with vague and slightly confusing information.

I think what you have ended up saying is that :

It runs OK on gas, but your tanks are now empty.
It doesn't run properly on petrol.

Is that the case ?

If so, then I think the first step is to put some gas in, and confirm that it does indeed run normally on gas. That will rule out ignition problems and problems with the gas system.

Running badly on petrol can be many things - when was it last serviced, in particular, fitting a new petrol filter ?

sorry for the muddle, runs on petrol but will no idle , so go to look at changeing the plugs. showing 2 lights on gas but switch to gas it dies. i think i must have pulled a bit of muck up when it ran low on petrol

if its of any help, my 4.0 will run perfectly on either gas or petrol, it does however backfire if you switch over too soon, this i put down to the coolant used in the vapouriser not bieng up to temp. this would not explain the sooting on petrol, however, i did have a similar problem with a ford escort (not lpg) it was a combination of plug leads breaking down under load and a faulty maf sensor. take the plug of maf and see if it runs on petrol. also check coolant is circulating through the vapouriser as more often than not the pipes to/from the vapouriser are one of the highest points and could easily become air locked!!!
