View Full Version : TD5 cutting out HELP

Our TD5 keeps cutting out, it will go for 2 or 3 miles and then revs drop and then it cuts out. When you roll to a halt and put it in neutral with the ignition still on I can't hear the pump, should it be running at that point?
When I switch off then then back on again it goes through it's priming sequence and after a few minutes and a lot of cranking it will start again and go for another couple of miles. Have changed the fuel filter although it was fairly new and the sedimentor as the thread was iffy but still no joy.
Any help would be much appreciated

Think you need to look in direction of pump by the sounds of things. If the pump stops you will effectively run out of diesel, and as you say you go through it's priming sequence and after a few minutes and a lot of cranking it will start.
You might need a new pump, check wiring to pump for damage or poor contact in the plug and socket. The pumps apparently get noisy when they are near the end of their life.

Are you actually activating the fuel priming function that's built into the ECU?
There is a section in the handbook on how to do this if you run out of fuel.
There is a precise sequence of steps you have to follow.
I think you switch ignition on but don't start, then maybe fully depress throttle pedal 5 times? Something like that. The car then goes into fuel pump prime mode.
If you're not doing this have a look in the handbook.

I think the handbook goes through a sequence of switching the ignition on and off. LR workshop manual tells you to switch on to position 2 and leave it for 3minutes, then full throttle and crank. You can switch on pos 2 on ignition switch, pump the throttle peddle 5times right to the floor in positive precise movements and the Amber MIL light will flash, this makes the pump run on for er don't know how long, but ages.

Thanks for the replies :)
Yes I am thinking that it has to be the pump, checked out everything else physically that I could think of but no joy.
My local garage now has it in as I ran out of time, they have checked things out and are coming to the same conclusion. They have a used pump that they know is a good one and are going to be putting it on either tonight or in the morning so fingers are now crossed.

Well it was not the pump :( Another pump tried but still exactly the same problem

maybe worth checking for damaged fuel lines or kinked sound's like a fuel starvation.

Cheers,
Are there any specific places I should be looking?
There are no 'outward' leaks, what parts could be drawing air in?
Can the fuel pump relay play up?
Thanks again :)

The relay could play up as you say, have you found out if it is definitely the pump stopping??
If it is then it should be quite simple to sort out.
The fuel pressure regulators do give trouble sometimes, but they normally just leak when that happens.
Briefly thinking away from the fuel delivery system, what about oil in the Injector harness?
Basicly when it goes wrong, you need to check if the pump is running and if you have voltage to the pump.

I would try changing the lower injector washers.

I would try changing the lower injector washers.
Cheers, loom was changed a month ago and is now all clear of oil all round incl inside the ECU (none found)
Are the injector washers a big job?
Thanks again
