Hi All,

Im going to do an oil and fillter change at the weekend and looking online there are various service kits availalbe. Can anyone recommend one. Also on the same point, there appears to be a huge varience in the cost of air filters, do the higher priced ones make any difference.

It is used mainly for everyday driving, and occasionally towing a boat (2000 kgs)

Any recommendations on oil?

Disco has 100k on it.

I just bought one of ebay, there are a number on there, I went for a slightly more expensive on which had the sump plug washer included, tho even that was less than 30 notes.

I also bought a K&N filter, better air flow and, if the lads on here are to be believed, if it needs regular cleaning (as opposed to replacing) will pay for itself (33 notes)

Mine is an 02 td5 with 70k

It depends. I bought all I needed from Paddocks.
Fuel filter: should have sump, to let water sometimes out (you have to open it).
Air filter: depends on driving habits. If it is tarmac all time, no financial gain from K&N, because can change the regular filter once a year - it is enough. If gravel, sand, offroading etc, than K&N, and clean regularly.
Oil filter - just buy one, not expensive, not uubercheap. Don't forget to lube the rubber ring before putting the new filter in place and if you can put a full filter on - pre-fill it with fresh oil before putting it back.

Hi there, with respect to you, I do not agree with your comment about changing the airfilter once a year.

I do oil and filters changes every 5000mls - a drop of oil and a few filters are pennies by comparison to broken engine bits and it runs better too.

I believe that LR say change your airfilter every 24k? Rediculous !! If you do it yourself and the airfilter costs £4.50+tax why not do it more regularly.

OK. Kit purchased from Paddocks. should have in a couple of days,

any opinions on if its worthwhile going for high grade oil or ownbrand etc?

also not worked much on Diesel engines, but this should be easy enough right? anything I should watch out for?

I've just gone with the halfrauds semi-synthetic stuff at about 13 quid for 5L. If I'm changing it every 6 months or 6k I'm not spending out on that magnatech stuff - you could probably order it cheaper from elsewhere I guess.

Oil and filters is a simple job (got my bits as a kit from paddocks too), just make sure you've got something large enough to catch all that old oil in. :p
If you're doing the fuel filter in the engine bay, you might have to tinker with the fuel primer pump.... on the 300tdi the pump didn't work so I had to get a spanner on the crank pulley to rotate the engine in order that the gubbins inside connects with the primer handle - I'm sure that someone else here can explain it better, if it's even necessary for a td5?

IIRC the oil filter that I got from paddocks came with a new copper washer for the sump plug, taped to the top of the box ...which was nice ;)

so, was going pretty well until I was finishing up, was putting the cap back on the centrifuge and the threads on the right had side pulled.

I don't think I over tightened it, but irrelevant anyway, as the result is the same.

its not the end of the world as I can put a longer bolt in and attach a nut the other end. May have to bore it out a bit, and thats not the plan I had for Sunday.

Any other suggestions graciously received.
