Hello guys!Loves this forum!I stumbled upon this forum by chance!Solved the mystery of the oil coming out of the ECU.Thanks!:DI owned a 2000 Td5 Discovery for a couple of months.I'm new to Land Rover vehicles so maybe I'm wrong.Every time I started the car,the last second after the car came alive.I heard this weird sound just in front of the driver(me),as if the starter slow to disengage.I thought the starter is worn out so I replaced a new starter.Unfortunately, the sound is still there!I went to the dealer to ask about the sound and he told me that the sound is normal for a Td5!:eek:Can anybody helps me out?

Hi Spankee, Sorry I can't help. So the dealer doesn't know what causes the sound then. Sounds must come from somwhere and if they have listened to the sound and can't help u who can.
Vacuum in the brake servo or ABS doing it's test may be.

Mine has a funny clunk noise about a second after I start the car, it sounds like the clutch pedal springing up as if your foot slips of it!! Mine has done it EVERY time I started the car in the last 6 months, so I assumed it was normal:D

I sometimes get what sounds exactly like a handful of pea gravel rattling about in a tin can when I'm rolling along in 1st or 2nd with no accelerator (duff particle filter?).

That and the intermittent squeaking the car sometimes makes when I first start it up - comes in about 1500-2000rpm and goes away after about 5 minutes. Sounds like the serpentine belt tensioner going again, but it doesn't sound like the budgies under the bonnet like last time lol

Oh yer, and the r r r r r r r sound made by the clutch when you start up sometimes. Goes away if you dip either the clutch or accelerator pedal about a half inch.

Hi there Jumpy, re the pea gravel noise, try this:
When you are first or second gear going slowly foot off the accelerator pedal, Gently apply the brakes just a tiny bit and listen for the noise.

IF it goes, it's the same as mine and it's the brake pads rattling in the calipers - perfectly normal.

Cheers

Ours makes possibley a simialr noise just after stating, i'm sure ours is the ABS modulator grunting.
It only dose if for a second, it sounds like it sort of burps just after you'v started.
It also randomly dose this when driving, very rarely though.
I say it is this because the same noise can be heard all the time traction contol is active, and if you stand on the breaks on a wet road.

You may find it's the Dual Mass flywheel if the noise goes when you rev slightly or press the clutch pedal.

Valeo pressure plates are now coming out with a self adjusting set up in the plate ( not fully sure how it works yet, but it's a type of slide) I think it's to make the pressure on the clutch arm easier by making the diaphragm fingers stay more level as the centre plate wears, instead of moving back and making for a heavier clutch. They rattle as they wear.

I've noticed the same "grumble" when I first start my 2001 ES auto and assumed it was something to do with the AB,S as if you start up with your foot on the brake pedal it doesn't happen!

Thanks for all the replies guys.Forgot to tell you guys that my Discovery comes with auto transmission. The sound that I heard sounded like two "trud-trud" sound.Gonna try the starting with the brake pedal depressed to see if it's the ABS.I talked to the dealer again and they said have to wait for one of their mechanic to come back from holiday. They assured me that it is nothing serious which I doubt it.Reminded me the times when they said all Td5 leaks oil from the ECU and it's normal!I will post again in a few days...

I tried start up with my foot on the brake pedal as suggested by shermydog and the sound is gone!Problem is I can feel something is knocking back against the brake pedal.Anybody experienced this before?

That is the ABS pulsing. It's chargiing and letting the pressure off.

You can feel it when you pull up at junctions and the ABS has a split sensor ring.

As said by a few of the others, it's normal. The system is setting its parameters.

Thanks Templ4r!That was quite reassuring for me.All my jap cars never had this problem,so I thought it is either not normal or it is unique to Land Rover. Thanks again for all the replies guys.
