Good day one and all!

Could anyone out there point me in the direction of the dim dip resistor or whatever it is called, the unit that is responsible for giving you dim, dipped beam headlights when just sidelights are selected with ignition on?

This is on a 1994 200TDi discovery, right hand drive if it makes any odds.

I would go out to look myself but I get distracted very easily by all of the other things falling off the poor old beast!

The 12V digital ballasts for my HID bulbs don't fancy the 7 or so volts they get with this dim dip stuff going on.

Also!

Have had my 200 TDi for just under 2 months, its on its second alternator belt already! Is it just me or, are these prone to fail? pulleys are all in line and in good condition.

Many thanks!

Dim dip resistor is located just to the left of the washer bottle in the engine bay and it's a gold colour and it may depend who's belts your using. Try a genuine one :)

I found the belts last longer if they are not overtightened which is the tendency but readjusted after a short while of fitting and rechecked regularly. I also kept a spare alternator belt already fitted and hanging loose with a cable tie behind the main belt, this made it much easier to fit on the road without removing the main belt.

Thank you Discool, I shall make myself a little bridge wire tomorrow so I can have just sidelights on now :)

I might dig deep and give genuine belts a try next time, I must admit I did over tighten the one that broke today... And it was £2 haha.

Prior to that though it had been fitted with a belt which was terribly cracked at only 4000 miles old, not making any noise as such, just badly cracked, After I replaced the cam belt and both drive belts the car developed a squeak, it took me a long time to find out that it was a UJ and nothing to do with the engine which I had immediately and with no thought concluded that it was! So in desperation almost, I overtightened the belt to see if it would shut up... Needless to say I feel pretty stupid now haha.

Anyway, all is well that ends well, tensioned the new alternator belt very conservatively and will keep a close eye over the next few miles.

Thanks for the tip on that littlelegs, a spare belt is definitely going to be kept in the car from now on!

Thanks for your help guys.
