I am having a problem with the offside rear brake light, on my 'j' reg disco 200tdi.
I have removed the side seat and with difficulty just removed the stop tail light holder.
I have replaced the bulb with a new one ,but this time I find that the brake light works and the tail not.
I tried a different bulb again and this time we were back to square one, with the offside brake not working.
Now I realise tht the bulb holder only accepts the bulb a certain way so it was put in correctly.
I am using the same typ of bulb as the one which was original.I have a few of them from the days of my Transit,as the dual filliment bulbs seem the same.
I noticed though that the bulb I removed never had the small solder ' blob' near to the glass bulb as my spare bulbs do, I assume that this 'blob' denotes an earth.
When fitted the solder ' blob' doesnt touch any contact.as there is not a contact place.
My question now is, could the dual stop tails that I possess, be different to the one I removed.
They all seem to have the contacts in the same position.

The blob you speak about is part of the manufacturing of the bulb some do some don't. The earth connection is picked up via the two side pins which would be offset on duel function bulbs.
I have been lucky and only had to replace one bulb so far, but the bulb holder connections seem a bit iffy twist to much and the contacts disconnect if I remember rightly.

Hope that helps u :)

Many thanks Discool, I note the points you make, I shall do it trial and error with the twisting of the holder.
It would seem as if the twist factor is the reason for the wrong sequence working when switched on.Many thanks.

Look into the hole where the bulb goes. The outer ring on the bulb, the shiny silver bit is the earth, the copper (I think) bits in the bottom are the "live" contacts. When you place the bulb in, the correct way round, one pin (on the silver bit, is set higher than the other, so are the recesses in the holder, a 1/4 ish turn should align the contacts. Clean the inside of the holder and the pins at the bottom to ensure a good connection and earth.

One other observation; are there two contacts at the bottom? is it supposed to be dual filament, ie are both behind the same lens, I can't remember from mine, I'll have a look later. I guess it must be though cos that is how the other side of yours works, isn't it. Silly me, just thinking aloud. ha ha.
