Hi,

As detailed in another thread, I'm about to take delivery of an N reg Disco 1).
The Land Rover stereo works fine and has a 6 cd changer.

Unfortunately, the display is very difficult to read due to age. If you look very carefully, you can make out which radio station is playing, but it's not ideal. Is it possible to get replacement heads for these units?

Cheers,

Chris.

Any normal single din head unit will fit and work.
when you take the old one out check the plugs on the cables and get a ISO block.
its a simple plug and play and saves you from having to cut all the cables.

Scott,

Thanks for the ultra quick reply.

I'm looking at The Car Audio Centre (http://www.caraudiocentre.co.uk/) and am wondering which models allow you to switch between different CD's, that are held in the CD changer. Is there a particular name for this functionality, that I can search for?

Cheers,

Chris.

you want a head unit with changer control.

do you have a changer in the car at the moment?
need to find what unit it is and match it up.

i'd personaly go for a MP3 head unit, less cds and more music.

Scott,

There is an under-seat change cartridge thing! I'll have a search, following your advice.

Chris.

i think they are a pioneer unit mate.

you'd be looking at £150+ for a pioneer head unit with changer control.

might be cheaper on ebay.

i removed mine and bought a MP3 unit.
it worked out cheaper.

The CD auto-changer fitted in a D1 is not compatable with any other make of head unit, nether is the sub in the back door. Dash controls can only only interface with certain makes/models of head unit and then only with an extra bit of kit.
There's no such thing as 'plug & play when it comes to replacing part only of the disco' sound system.

Why not see if the display can be repaired?..... God forbid that we should become a throwaway society.....

My back door sub is working with my jvc DAB head unit.

Hi,

I went the MP3 route myself on my D1 with a Sony CDX-GT410U ... it plays MP3 and WMA files on CDs, also has USB and AUX (ipod) inputs. Also replaced the speakers and it sounds great (£100 for unit fitted at Sony Centre and £60 for 4 speakers). My rear door sub doesn't work anymore, but there are some threads on here that explain how to sort it, but I couldn't understand them :D. There are plenty on ebay cheaper than this.

Is that your way of saying "tell me how!"?

I can get some pics tomorrow if you want but basically you will need to get a phono lead and connect it to one of the mass of wires there. Phono lead goes in back of stereo (well this is how mine works). Do you have red/yellow/white sockets on the back of your head unit?

Does anyone have a definitive answer about whether I can use another (new) head unit, with my existing CD changer, under the seat?

Cheers,

Chris.

Hi Chris, yes you can use a new head unit with your existing CD multi unit, but it does have to be compatible with the existing unit and your choice will be very limited, by comparison to starting again with a new CD/mp3 head unit.

That definitive for yer !!:D

If it's the same as my 95 one, pull out the stereo take the top case off and there is a bulb holder at the top of the diplay, that turns and comes out just replace the capless bulb and you will have a display again.

found some pics.

Its the same bulb as the switches have (not a capless bulb) and cost about £1.20 from dealer.

Why not upgrade to a later Discovery 2 head unit - they should be compatible with your autochanger under the seat and should enable you to add in a changer click on the steering wheel shroud as in the later versions.

Promising. Is it easy to get the stereo out? DO I have to disconnect it, and if so, do I need to know a PIN for it?

Cheers,

Chris.

Hi Chris, you shouldn't need to disconnect your headunit therefore no code will be required.

You will need to open the locking pins on each side of the radio. To do this there are usually one or two holes either side and you need to put something down the holes to trip the locking pins - I use appropriately sized nails/allen Keys/screwdrivers. Once you have tripped the locking pins, just pull the radio out.

Once it's out, undo the screws that hold the top plate in place and locate the bulb and replace.

Hi, guys.

Just used the allen keys and got the stereo away from the dash. It looks like it is made by Phillips and the part number bit says AMR1488 1nf. I can't see how to get the top panel off, though.

Can anyone help (I don't want to break it!).

Cheers,

Chris.

Can you tell me the part number for these bulbs (if for all colors that would be great)? Some local sellers want about 8 UKP for a piece, will try to find these in some on-line stores.

STC1878

I actually got the bulb from maplins (http://www.maplin.co.uk) and fitted it in to the original holder.

Hi, all.

Just got around to trying the replacement bulb, and it is markedly smaller than the old one. I've attached some poor pictures from my 'phone. looks like this isn't the right part, can anyone help further? (The old bulb is the yellow one on the right- I cut the green sleeve off it to check the filament)

Cheers,

Does anyone know whether the Disco 2 units are compatable with the Disco 1 CD changer and remote switches? If so, are they available anywhere? I can't get eBay here at work.

Cheers, discool.

My concern is that Phillips stereos seem to need to be matched with phillips CD changers, so I am concerned that something will not be right.

I guess i could always just give it a go, but it's a lot of money for a gamble.

Chris.

There's only one CD player listed and that is Philips AMR3154 and the six CD magazine is STC1624.

Double check your autochanger connector before looking for new head unit. I had same problem with old Discovery. Bought autochanger, then found it had a square cable connection rather than round version. They changed over the years.
