My Discovery 2 has developed a judder through steering wheel on hard braking at speed. Would this be simply brake pads needing replacement, or possibly the disc? Noticed lot of black dust from front brakes, maybe they wear more quickly.

Front brakes do wear faster than rears. You have greater effort on them, that's one reason for larger pads.

If you can feel the steering shaking when you press the brakes, the discs are warped, Black dust is heavy braking or scored discs. Automatics suffer and show more black dust.

It's worth having the bushes in the panhard rod looked at as well, they amplify the problem.

Templ4r is right. Usually a symptom of warped discs. They are pretty cheap to buy and it's not worth trying to skim the old ones. Budget for new pads and pins at the same time. I've replaced all 4 discs and all of the pads & pins on mine plus a stuck caliper on one of the rear ones. Makes a big difference to the braking!

I had exectly the same problem with my disco and needed to replace both discs

I have a similar judder under braking, but only at certain speeds/brake pedal pressures. Also there's a lip of corrosion of about 2mm depth around the outside edge of the braking surface of the disks so I've been bracing myself for replacing disks and pads.

What make do you recommend? Are the EBC ones from Paddocks worth the extra cash? If so, which compound? Also, what about cross-drilled disks? I don't do much towing, just road and light/medium recreational off road use.

Thanks

Any decent make are good enough for normal service e.g. QH, Lockheed, AP. For what I can tell, Discos aren't particularly heavy on brakes unless you do a lot of towing or off road work.

Cross drilled ones are a waste of money unless you intend to make them work hard.

You may wish to avoid Britpart!
