hope you guys can help
I have a 1998 td5 es auto that cut out at traffic lights at weekend would not start up again.
I have had a high pitched whine from fuel pump for last 2 weeks, could this be the problem ?
If not where do i start to fault diagnose.

Yes could be the pump, I am in the middle of this problem too although I can get mine going again after a lot of cranking.
It is looking on mine like it is the injector sealing washers ( a replacement pump was tried and no joy) so fingers and toes crossed tomorrow ;)

Local LR dealer has sold 121 sets of the injector seals so far this year

Good luck :)

Quick update!
All fixed now and the D is running sweet as a nut :D (touches wood ;))
Injector washers did the trick plus oil and filters changed.
Our fuel pump which had been quite noisy is now silent :)

Hi Pork-pie :) No it was at a local very helpful garage.

To begin with they swapped the pump with a known good one (no joy obviously) so swapped back after a good clean of our old one.
Replaced the injector o rings and copper washers.
Oil and filter change
Fitted a new hose (I supplied) from the PAS reservoir to pump incl 1 litre of pas fluid.

Total incl all parts, fluids, labour and VAT £226 Result I reckon!

Dread to think what a main dealer might charge.

Good luck, ours is better than ever all round :)

BTW (and it is probably already posted somewhere) but you can usually tell if it is these washers causing the problem because your engine oil level will rise slightly (ours even smelt slightly diesel ish :))

it's back and seems ok, not as much as i thought either, 3hrs@ £75=£225,
1 washer @ 77p, 4 x screws @ 37p (screws@ 37p) ea, gasket @ £20 (gasket@£20) tot £247, result? i dunno, only time will tell.

If it's the O-rings you will get diesel in the oil and the level will rise. If it is the copper washers you will get combustion gases in the diesel and have all sorts of strange problems incuding sudden cutting out, fuel pumps whining, bad starting etc.
