hello people the bloke i bought my 1995 disco of told me not to let the diesel go below quarter tank as it tends to conk out for no reason and low and behold the next day the fuel went about a mm below quarter and the engine stopped i started it again and of we went to the petrol station is this common or is there something wrong thanks for any replys

I think the petrol pick up pipes (in the tank) have a gauze filter on the end. The early 90/110 V8s did anyway. The gauze can sometimes clog up and the system starves itself.
