Obviously the main considerations are;
Driving style ; rough, smooth, harsh acceleration, etc....
Road conditions; traffic, empty (3:00 in the morning), gradient
Road type; B-road (moors), A-road (trunk road), motorway
Condition of the vehicle; servicing, load, tyre pressures, etc...

As for me; I've just some mixed running;
Home to Manchester Air-port (60mph-max, steady traffic-flow)
Some A-roads on way home (A628 Woodhead Pass)
Green Laning (Holme-Moss)
Trailer work (Wakefield - Huddersfield-Barnsley-Wakefield)
Photo- shoot (today); home-Halifax- Bradford-Otley-Leeds-home

It's just turned over to 285miles, and the guage has just gone below 3/4's full (from absolute brimming)

However I don't let the engine struggle, or rev high. The gear engaged is suitable to the road conditions & traffic flows.
It's rare anywhere that I exceed 2,000rpm, unless it's very steep.

I fully expect to see between 550-600 miles from a tank (if I was to run it almost empty)

As well as the Series III I have a Rover 25 2.0TD and I usually manage about 500 miles out of twenty odd quid. Its pretty nippy for a diesel rover as well. On the run down to Wales to pick up the Series 3 it averaged over 80mpg running between 60 and 70. :yikes:

Cheers

Capone,

As Bush Tucker Man indicates it depends on how you drive etc.

I live in Gourock and occasionally travel to Bellshill where I work, around trip of 80miles per day 5 times a week plus the usual runnning around at the weekend - I was getting a nice 550 per tank.

Now I am back working in Glasgow, I use the train, but I drive to the station and back everyday, so my mileage has dropped to 450 per tank.

I've got no idea, yet....

I'm finding more and more jobs to do as I get used to my Disco. The most pertinent being to get the fuel gauge fixed :Cross:

Is replacing a radiator an easy DIY job? What do you reckon to a rough cost?

I love my Landy but I think it's going to keep me busy :buck:

I seem to average 450miles to a tank full and thats a steady 70mph on long runs and town driving (not breaking the speed limits). But I do have the pump and turbo wound up a bit and I have a safari snorkle too so that wont help!

With VERY careful driving and keeping the speed to max 55mph, I recently achieved 37.764 mpg.
This was a specific test run to see if mod i'd fitted was working effectively or not.
The last time i did a fuel test (over a year ago ) I was getting around 34 mpg.......but again that was VERY careful drving, ie no harsh accelerating, no changing down all through the gears, and gentle use of brakes.
I reckon 40 mpg is achievable with even more careful driving....:buck:

But of course we dont all drive like that all the time, me included :goofylook

Sneakypete, I also live in Gourock. My TD5 is nearly 5 years old
and I can envisage needing a mechanic for those jobs that are beyond me. Please contact me if you know of any good mechanics ( buckshee of course ).

cheers, Craig

my 300 tdi with auto box can't better 420, and I'm a VERY gentle driver. I do wonder whether there's anything I can do - its just had a full dealer service so I assume its working as landrover intend.

Ideas?

I usually get 450 miles on around £50 in my 200TDi Disco (L reg 106k), no matter how i drive it, which seems odd, as would expect lots of difference between easy driving, and giving it some stick :dunno1:

But very pleased with the mpg :yay:

I can usually get from Glossop in Derbyshire to Mid Clyth Caithness, a few miles south of Wick, on 14 gallons of deisel, that is about 35-38 mpg.

I have an M reg 111K 300tdi with a famous four fan and Monroe shocks.

On this type of run, that is motorways (M60, 61, 6, 74 & 9) and fast 'A' roads (A9), I normaly keep to a steady 2000 revs. :yay:

My normal commute to Salford get me about 27-29 mpg. This is in normal traffic.

Reading these replies makes me most depressed...I only ever got around 25mpg average with my 300,.. best close to 30, but worst low 20s. Its down to driving, thats stating the obvious,..but..the one thing that really does for the mpg is constant motorway runing around 80 or so. Its all down to aerodynamics and at this speed the mpg drops off sharply. My current Disco, a TD5, is largely used for motorway commutes, and although its very happy at these speeds, and with only a touch of throttle to maintain, it rarely breaks 24. I don`t think thats bad, and miles better than the Jap 4x4s.
I run a V8 Classic, and use it occasionally in place of the Disco...just to keep me in touch with fuel consumption... you realise then that your TD5 is running on fresh air. Wonderful vehicle!

I was beginning to wonder.

My TD5 ES has achived an average of 23.7 mpg in the first 3 months of its life. Highest was 26.7, lowest (first tank) was 20.6.

(Converted to miles per tank, best was 476 miles on 81 litres, worst was 358 miles on 79 litres. (full tank is 90 litres))

Most of its 3,500 miles were on longer jouneys, mainly motorway or good A road. Speed limited to 70 max for 90% of the time. Economy has been hit by sitting in many a long M25 queue and slow London suburb driving.

On the whole, I probably shouldn't complain as my mondeo only got mid to high 20s (V6).

My TD5 is auto, so all this talk of limiting revs to 2000 is out of the window.

Still, it would be nice to edge up to that so-far illusive 30 mpg.

We may get to Scotland over Easter, so the long uninterupted trip may give the opportunity to see what fuel consumption figures are possible.

Just had my TD5 GS (manual) for 3 weeks but so far I seem to be averaging around 27 mpg, including a long motorway run sitting around 80mph - would guess it would be better at 60!

No more ways to increase the mpg guys, bt a tip on money saving .........

I go to france on the late cheapie ferry crossing (£15), with under quarter on a tank, do i little shopping, then fill up to the brim with deisel.
What would normally cost me £50 to fill, only costs between £30-35. So I get to cross the channel for free, see some sights, and get some booze :guiness:
