I go greenlaning with my wife and then camp wild up a byway, sleeping in the 110. We used to go in the 109" with the canvas top and rips, which was interesting in the rain! How far can you tow your caravan up a byway?

I'm not the lest deterred by anyone calling me a softie for holidaying in a caravan, I relish the days when its ****ing down outside, the tent poles on the guys next door tent are swaying in the wind, his roof is leaking, and her that must be obeyed is raving "I've had enough, lets go and buy a caravan" ......of course i'm sitting all warm and cosy watching the DVD or a movie on the Sat TV, after having an onboard shower and drinking a toast to his early departure home :p

BTW ......I still use our tent on occassion :buck:

lol OF been in a similar situation but it was waking up to find a layer of ice inside the tent that caused the buying of the caravan, mind you must of been mad going camping in Glencoe in mid february

As an alternative to the caravan, consider a trailer tent. All the advantages of "real" canvas camping with lots of the advantages of a caravan. Lots of living room. Lots of storage space. "Proper" beds as well as sleeping on the ground. Fits very neatly behind the Discovery. I can see over the top of it. Fits in the garage. And for O/F's benefit, yes we have gas central heating! Proper kitchen, with sink too.:p

Sleeps 8 in comfort.

And as for being blown away, we've slept in the trailer tent in huricane force winds at Glenbrittle on Skye while other "mountain" tents were being bown away or torn apart. :yay:

And all for £500, 16 years ago, second hand! A bargain!!

Probably not too good off road though:dunno1:

And as for TV in the tent, I don't even have one in the house. LOL

You all need to experience life in the raw, we must cast off our 21st century domestic neccesities. Get back to nature and embrace the natural environment.

Now all together chant: HHHOOOOOMMMMHHHOOOOOMMMMHHHOOOOOMMMMHHHOOOOOMMMMHH HOOOOOMMMMHHHOOOOOMMMMHHHOOOOOMMMMHHHOOOOOMMMMHHHO OOOOMMMMHHHOOOOOMMMMHHHOOOOOMMMM

I just really wanted to see who camps in or on their Landy.

We went back from canvas to comfort after a disatrous holiday in our brand new tent.It poured down for the whole time we were away (we cut the hol short by 5 days).
On our return home, the tent went!In came a 79 sprite Muskateer. Then on to an old Lynton(donor of our trailer),then an
Ace.Lovely van! Then a 87 muskateer.went away in that........popped in a caravan sales place to get the tow-ball tightened and checked.Lo!There was our dream 'van...........at a price we could afford!1994 Lunar Carlton(Limited edition premiere).

The rest is history.I just love this caravan. This is the first one we've ever had that has got running hot water!Luxury!
Hitch up and clear off is what we try to do as much as possible!:p :yay: :yay: Having our place on wheels allows us to do just that.We caravan all year round, too.

Naa,keep your canvas.I'll enjoy my pikey wagon.:yay:

I think being outside, wet, cold, miserable, and filty is half the fun of camping.

Is this the sort of Caravan you had in mind?!
(North of the Daintree on the old road).

Still, if it hasn't got room to tow the horse, i'd rather be in a tent :D

does camping 'under' the landy qualify? (un)fortunately I have a disco, no room to crash in the back for the night but I use my swag and now I have a vehicle high enough to clear my hips (lol) I'll be able to sneak under it instead of out in the open in my swag like I ususally do.

Michelle,
camping under your vehicle does count, as you're not in a towed plywood/plastic box. I guess under vehicle camping has advantages and disadvantages:

+ easy to spot and repair the chassis, etc. (the arc from the welder would also help with reading bedtime stories)

- quicksand, you may feel deflated. Seriously a couple of squaddies died sleeping under their Challenger tank some years back, as did some Russians on a Sahara expediton.
