That's tricky!

The AA will only refund you the security held on the Carnet when the vehicle arrives back in the UK. Maybe you should get a Carnet from AA South Africa.

This is how I imported my 110 into SA from Zimbabwe.

I obviously didn't need a Carnet as I only drove from one country to the other.

First off, I brought it (with a trailer) in on a Temporary Import Permit (TIP).

Once the truck was in my house in Pretoria, I went to the SABS and applied for a LOA - Letter of Authority.

The SABS wanted a Build Certificate. I had to get hold of the Heritage Centre in Gaydon for that. I'd suggest you get this before leaving the UK.

I then went to the Department of Trade and Industry in Pretoria and applied for an Import Permit.

The DTI wanted two quotes from Land Rover franchised dealers in SA to confirm the value of the vehicle. I had trouble getting these and ended up using a dealer in Potchefstroom and another in Vereniging. Nobody in Pretoria or Johannesburg would put their necks on a block to value the vehicle.

The 30 days TIP was running out, so I got the TIP extended for another 11 months by Customs.

Once I had the two important documents in my hands I went to my clearing agent who did the (back then) DA500. I understand it's now a DAsomething else.

I then went off to Customs with all my forms. They were happy with them and made an appointment for a physical exam.

I arrived at Customs on the due date and at the due time, the man checked the VIN and engine number and stamped my forms and hey presto the truck was imported into SA.

There was no duty paid as I was a returning resident - like you.

I then went to the licencing office and the fun started.

The lady at the licence office wanted a different type of Zim police clearance (a permanent export clearance as opposed to a temporary export clearance). I ended up having my fixer in Harare make some payments and he eventually got the required document a couple of weeks later.

Back to the council with the new police clearance that wasn't worth the paper it was printed on.

I'd suggest you get something from the UK Police to show that the vehicle has been cleared for permanent export.

The SA authorities also wanted to see my original registration book. DO NOT send your V5 to DVLA once you've exported the vehicle from the UK.

The council took all my forms and sent me off to the SAPS for yet another police clearance. This is after the thing was checked in Harare before leaving, checked at Beitbridge as I was leaving, checked at Beitbridge when I arrived, then checked at three roadblocks between Beitbridge and Musina and then checked by Customs.

The SAP cleared the truck and sent me back to the council offices.

The papers were then lodged and we waited, and we waited, and we waited.

Nine months later I got a call to bring the truck with it's roadworthy to get a final police clearance.

I took the truck for it's roadworthy, got the second SAPS clearance and then went back to the council offices where they completed the registration.

The whole process took just under a year.

Are you returning to SA permanently after living in the UK? If so, then you should be able to get an import permit for the vehicle.

If you're not returning to the country permanently, then the chance of getting an import permit is close to zilch.

They will not allow you to bring a second hand vehicle into the country if you intend selling it here.

You will need a Carnet for the vehicle in order to get through several of the countries that you will go through. I doubt if you can get a Carnet from a country other than the one where the vehicle is registered.

www.onewaysouth.com (http://www.onewaysouth.com)

There are loads of these on the net, but I sold this guy and his wife my RTT so I check their site quite regularly.

They did what you are planning, maybe you'll find some info in their prep that will give you some ideas.
