Afternoon all....seen a disco for sale

1990 TDi
132K
white (so at least I'll see any rust)
12months MOT
7 seats
3 door
bullbar
spots
side steps
twin S/R
tow pack
electrics

The fella is selling at £2200 and I'm probably going to have a look at it some time this week.

Anyone know of any problems with this sort of age, know of anything to be aware of and from what I've said does it sound a good deal?

How much would a full re-spray be?

Look at the doors casing as they rust like ******y on some. Also check the rear cross member and boot floor.

check for disc wear (thickness/shoulders) and seized rear calipers.

gearbox - will it up easily move from 1 to 2 and then 3 down to 2 on the move. Does low box and diff lock work?

Does the 'other' little gearstick move?

Front to back is low and normal box - you will feel the gears are much lower than standard, just drive a few yards. You may need to enagage it will rolling slowly or slipping the clutch to bring the gears in line (there is no synchro high-to-low or vica versa)


Side to side is difflock (left for engage) - look for a yellow light on the dash. It may take 100 yars to switch off (light may flicker)after you move the lever back "they all do that". Don't drive in difflock on tarmac!!!

Can't stress the rust factor too much. Check along the bottom of the doors and the inner wings. They are not structural as such but ARE an MOT failure.

Check all the electrics work.

Be critical as there are loads for sale between 2 and 2 1/2 grand.

when you say that there's loads out there for 2-2 1/2K...where you looking? I'm in Bradford and the cheapest i've seen (apart from this one ) is around 4 - 5K! there's not much going on older than '95.
