1.8 (petrol) Freelander. Drove some ~230 miles without a hitch.
Around the 230 mark the rear-right window made some funny whirring noises and wouldn't go back up and we had to manually force it. I may have pulled too hard into a turnoff (as we slammed a little) if that helps explain it.
But anyway after reaching our destination and being stationary it's time to do the 200 odd miles journey back, and whilst in traffic, in the second lane, it stalls. We couldn't get the engine to start and there were no warning lights except the red oil light. I wasn't driving at the time so I'm not convinced that the engine hadn't actually started, and because of the panic and noise around us it might have been possible we didn't realise - but I'm told no, it stalled and wouldn't start.
Thankfully a motorbike pulls up alongside and he pushes us off to the hard shoulder. We manage to start the engine after a bit of an "arggh, what are we going to do" style discussion and everything seems normal until a short time later when driving at speed (in the first lane) we start losing power and have to pull over to the hard shoulder just 1m away from the service station. My dad, undeterred, decided to try it again in order to get it to the service station, and that worked out fine.
We then had to pay £50 (and wait nearly an hour) for the AA to honour our membership and come out to look at the car. He checks the oil, had the engine running, revved it a little, stuff like that and says he can see nothing mechanically wrong. Being so far from home he can only tow us to the nearest garage where we are left at their mercy - so no prizes for guessing what my dad decides in the end, and surprisingly the journey home is uneventful and the car is running fine, back to normal ???
We're going to need to do that trip again and whilst it's going into the garage (obviously) I wouldn't mind some heads up as to what we can expect and what you guys think may be the cause of this.
