For about 6 weeks now I have been experiencing a problem with my 3.9 V8 where it will run for 15 - 20 minutes and then die. The problem was evident regardless of whether I was running on petrol or lpg, but with lpg there was a nice backfire after the engine died. I was able to restart immediately most times and then continue on. As it was happening just before the end of my journey I cant say how long it could then run for, but it did go for at least another 5 minutes or so to get me home. Recently, it has got to the stage where it dies as soon as I restart it and then won't start again for a good 5 minutes.
Today when I was checking over the ignition system I noticed a hiss coming from near the engine, but couldn't place it at the time. I went back out about an hour ago and the hissing was still there, but this time it was easy to locate. The pipe into the purge connector on the charcoal cannister had come away completely and this hiss was it sucking air in. I have refitted it and have now run for a good 45 minutes (switching between lpg/petrol) without any problems at all.
Is it possible that this pipe, which seems to have worked its way loose over time, was the culprit for the problem or have I just been lucky on tonights test run?
