well done for choosing a disco lol and as far as i know all 300s came with egr but you can blankk them off its easy and lift pumps dont tend to go just get one with service history and have a good poke about the boot floor and the arches i mean push hard check when the cambelt was done aswell as this is a must when buying one also how much have you got to spend????

thanks

Look around carefully and buy the best maintained/condition you can afford, but keep back some of your budget for snagging, the youngest will be about 10 years old by now.......DONT buy the first one you see - there are loads around, common probs, rust in sills, inner wheel arches, boot floor. Cam belt must be changed before the service interval in the book. Any of these faults are a good bargaining point, but you will still have to pay to get them done. Engines will go to the moon and back if well looked after. There are CHEAP Land Rovers and GOOD Land Rovers, but you will be lucky to get both in the same package. (IMHO).
Good luck!!

i agree with what paul said i looked at four before i brought mine and this is brilliant dont worry to much about bodywork try to get one with no sunroofs as these cause problems like leaking and staining the rooflining just have a good poke around and you will eventually find a good one as said there are CHEAP ones and there are good ones just look and you will come up trumps

good luck

I blanked the EGR off yesterday. Took half an hour plus a piece of scrap aluminium sheet. It has made negligible difference to the performance -- which probably means that mine was working ok int the first place.

Are you sure you don't mean ECU i.e. the electronic engine management system. In which case, all autos have an ECU and all manuals after about 97 or 98. Can't remember the changeover point.

EDC or Electronic Diesel Control came in in 1996 on autos 'boosting ' them to 120bhp, but as far as I'm aware, on manual gearbox cars EDC was never fitted to the Disco1.

Thanks TBL.

Cal, from your posts, I wonder if you're looking at the right car for your needs?

The 300tdi has 120 bhp as standard and weighs just over 2 tonnes unladen weight. Assuming that you:

Remove the Cat (3-5 bhp) £25
Remove the viscous fan (5bhp) £0
Uprate the intercooler (about 3-5 bhp) £150 - £200
Gas flowed exhaust / remove middle box (~3 bhp) up to £250
High flow air filter (2-3 bhp) £50
Tweak the fuel pump (3-5 bhp) £0

Then the most you're ever going to get is about 150bhp for a cost of £300-£500. That's still not going to deliver blistering performance although the mid range torque should be pretty good.

Bear in mind that the car will only be worth £2500 at best!

Perhaps you should think about a V8 petrol?

I recon i can get a good tune from the fuel pump and just turbo, aswell as straight through exhaust, 20bhp could be acheievd just from that. then ive got Egr and that viscous fan and the intercooler(better fmic will make my charge temps lower so can run more boost) even though il run 25psi on stock intercooler

im looking to spend around £1500 on the disco and £1500 ontop of it on parts id like

youd be hard pressed to find one for 1500 without having to spend some more on it to get it through the mot but best of luck id say dont get one with sunroofs they only cause problems and if you turn the boost up too much you will start cooking things there are certain things you can do to a landie to make it good dont go over the top a straight through exhaust will e too loud just think about taking the cat off and the centre box and leave the rear that will make quite a difference in torque and power delivery

thanks

If you are going to run 25 psi boost on a 300tdi then you had better budget for a new radiator, water pump and thermostat for a start. Then you may JUST prevent blowing the cylinder head gasket.

Secondly, spending £1500 means that you should expect to spend another £600-£700 just getting it into good shape as a minimum. The chances are that a £1500 Disco will have rust (sills, inner wings, rear door wheelarches, boot floor, possibly body mounts), will need some mechanical TLC, bushes, brakes, swivel bearings, wipers, cam belt etc).

I spent just under £3k when I bought mine but have still spent about £500 this year for the MOT and another £250 for various things that have gone wrong plus various happy weekends just spending my time putting things right. All of the ones that I saw around £1500 - £2000 were real dogs, albeit that that was before the price collapsed totally ... :(
