As title says. Got a good 200 engine in a knackered disco and a 300 disco with a knackered engine.
How easy is it to put a 200 engine in the 300? Is it worth putting 200's gearbox in with it to make it easier?
Thanks in advance for any replies.

Although the engines are broadly similar, there are numerous minor differences to the various fixtures and fittings. You will need to check silly things like the radiator hose connections but on the whole it shouldn't be too difficult.
At worst I think that you may have to make up connections for the alternator, air filter and heater hoses but that's not rocket science.
I can't remember but I think that the engine mounts are the same - doubtless someone will know for sure...
If you're doing the swap then I would think that taking the box as well might be a good idea remembering that the earlier box was less reliable than the 300 box. While it's out you may as well change the clutch too.
If the 200 engine will fit your 300 box then I'd be tempted to keep the later box depending on condition.

Thanks for the info. The 300 box is actually fine... eg. no problems with second gear etc. Having said that if it is easier to just put the 200 box in i think we will do that. The less messing about the better with this one, we could do with getting it done asap.
Will report back when its finished.

I've read some stuff about similar things which may shed some light on this subject.
I have been thinking about putting a 200tdi in my Series 2a LR, and by all accounts it's a direct swap for the 2.25 engine which is there now.
I have recently read a couple of threads about putting a 300tdi in, and they seem to suggest you have to cut the engine mounts off as they are positioned differently on a 300tdi.
One thread is here, it also talks about conversions for mounting it to the series gearbox (again the 200tdi mounts straight to it but the 300 doesn't - may help with your issue?):

Thanks for that link. After a quick read it seems the 200 engine wont get on very well with the 300 gearbox, and something made me even think the transfer boxes are different. And the engine mounts are different. So if i was to do this engine change i need to get some engine mounts as they seem to be different also and put engine/gbox and tbox out of the 200 into make it easiest?
seems like a lot of hassle but when we have the donor car just sitting there it seems a waste to go buy another 300 engine :/
I think we will need to just get stuff out of 300, get stuff out of 200 and see what it looks like.
Knowing my luck we'll struggle like mad getting it all to fit/work then it'll blow up but ill keep you posted. If anyone else has anything to add comments welcome/appreciated and thanks guys for the help so far.
