Has anyone tried an accoustic blanket on their Disco engine? Will it fit or will it foul anything - just looking for a cheap and cheerful way to loose a few decibels on the motorway.

Two suggestions: first, make sure the viscuous coupling of the cooling fan is not stuck in engaged mode all the time: when it is, it does an awful howl all the time, and moreover, eats away nearly 2HP and lots of wasted fuel. When operating properly, it should howl very prominently when you start, go on for a few minutes at most, and then simply disappear (the noise). Made an enormous difference in mine. Can't really check it when running, since it is not really freewheeling, so don't try to hold/stop it with your hand :-)
Second, yes, I went out and bought a laminate insulation blanket from a building supplies store, cut it more or less to form and glued it with contact glue, thinking it'll hold at least a year - it's still there in place three years later, although parts have frayed off.

Thanks Zohartheziggy, I have aways wondered what the howl was, I suspected the fan it sounds like a turbine and is loud but only outside, and as you say it only lasts a minute or so, although on some very hot days and when I have had the a/c on it does return when driving slowly in traffic.

I live and I learn.

Coupling was replaced about a year ago, still ok.

Sure, on hot days or while using the A/C, the fan should start doing its work, right :) so then it cuts in again and the howling is a good indication that ev'thing is ok.

Hi there I took the viscous fan off both our Disco's pretty much as soon as I got them as I believe they are over-cooled for normal road use and do absorb a little power. NEVER had any overheating problems with either, even when towing !!

For most of the time on our little recent jaunt in the 300 the fan was off but for the slow speed off-road sections I put it back on, just in case (takes 30 secs to do, always in the boot).

Cheers
