View Full Version : Fuel pump failure

I have a 2002 (52reg) freelander, and it was performing perfectly for 6 years. This year we decided to go for a service at a local garage instead of the dealer's. Everything went smoothly, until:

1 week since the service the engine stalls on the road, so we had to be towed home. The car is currently at the same garage who did the last service. They claim that the (rear) fuel pump is broken, and we need to replace it (£280 + VAT all inclusive).

What could have been the cause for the fuel pump failure? Could it be some mistake at the latest service? Yes, they replaced the fuel filter during the last service, so they definitely were touching the pump.

Or am I just oversuspicious and this is the way the things happen? It was just very strange to have the breakdown less than 50 miles since the latest service.

Hi there the fuel pump and filter are mounted to the same bracket but i cant see how you could damage the pump while replacing the filter but it is possible.Lawson

Sorry for a very ignorant question, but: Are all the fuel filters the same or they have different grades?

Fair enough, it was a stupid question, let me say it in a different way. Could the mechanic fit a wrong filter or are they all the same?

When you say different grades were you meaning, for example, The Bosch brand of filters are better quality than ones made by Champion ?

Or did you mean the completely wrong type/fitment of filter.

Methos.

I meant a completely wrong type. Probably I am just paranoid. Please, don't get me wrong, I am not trying to find a way to blame the mechanic, I am trying to understand if I need to re-service the car (properly this time) to avoid further breakdowns this week.

You can fit the filter the wrong way round quite easilly its like a cylinder with a pipe connector on each end. genuine ones tell you which way to fit them but not sure about non genuine.Lawson

Hi,

From what i've read on freelander forums this is a fairly common failure.

Also if i'm right the rear 'primary' fuel pump would not be touched during a routine service, the fuel filter being under the bonnet.
maybe it's just a coincidence, I can't think what they could do to contribute to it's failure.

Cheers, Chaser....

The petrol fuel filter is part of the pump assembly, in the fuel tank.

Check the, electrics multi pin plug is Ok. Make sure the pump wires have not been trapped when they re fitted the assembly. Kame sur ethe filter is still connected and not come away.

I assume that the diesel one (TD4) is about the same construction, isn't it? Should I take the broken pump for an autopsy? :)

On a TD4 after 02 onwards the filter is under the rear right wheel arch before 02 it was under the bonnet.Lawson

Hi,

I tried changing my fuel filter in my freelander the other day, and I couldn't get the thing out from the sleeve. The manual says to simply slide it out but it wont move at all.
Getting to the filter was easy. After removing the pipes on either end of the cylinder shouldn't replacing the filter be just a straightforward pull out and replace? Is there a technique to sliding it out?
I spent hours trying to figure a way to get it out, I tried pushing and pulling but it won't move at all. I'm afraid to do anything else to it I don't want to cause damage elsewhere.

I have a freelander sport premium, 54 reg. I've had it from new and I've done 30,000 miles so far.

I would extremely appreciate it if anybody could help me with this.

Regards
Turan

Hi Turan you sometimes need to persuade them out with a hammer and long screwdriver if you damage the old filter it doesnt matter once its about half way out get a good pair of grips and twist it and work it out. Make sure the new one goes in the right way round.Lawson
