Hello

I have thought that the TD4 was under powered thats why i was looking at the V6

Hi Graham firstly DONT buy a 1.8 they are underpowered, unfuel efficiant, and very unreliable (Head gasket) and will generally ruin your life.

As for a Td4 they are your best bet they are very reliable if well maintained and are not bad on juice.

The V6 ones are more rare they are very smooth but not as quick as you might expect and are very heavy on fuel. also if you look at a V6 with 72000 miles or more on the clock make sure its had cambelts done if not budget about £500-£600 to get them done.
At the end of the day its up to you tis is my view.Lawson

Hi

All the hype & cry of the freelander being a load of C*** are sometimes a bit O/T.

Granted the 1.8 & V6 does & can cause problems more than a TD4.

A lot depends on how mechanically adept you are, its always been the case that most people say 'That a landrover owner needs to be a mechanic to fix them,, even before the arrival of the freelander.

More so if you were the owner of a 2A ser 3 or 90,110.

Plenty of makes of cars also get there fair share of critisicm of bad, good, unrelaiable, etc
LandRover is not alone in the world of vehicles breakingdown.

I have a 90 h/top, TD4 freelander 5dr and a 3dr 1.8 softback.

All the jobs get done by myself.

So back to your decision,, are you willing to work on it,,, go for the TD4 if not one of the petrols.

I honestly find the design of the freelander good, even with a lot of parts coming out of the rover parts bin of the 80's.
Just a shame about engine and drivetrain, surely someday somone will come up with a replacement even if it was electronic modification to the 4x4 system by substituting the vc with something .

As Lawson says, the V6 costs a lot to do the cam belts and if the VIS fails in the intake manifold, that's another £500. I personally think it is the wrong engine for a Freelander, it's too quick. They are not a nice engine to work on.

The TD4 is the way to go, but if you are handy with spanners, get a 1.8, they are very easy to work on and cheap. The L series Diesel is getting a bit dated and the vehicles are reaching the age where money needs spending, you might as well put oit towards a TD4.

thanks for the replies guys, what about the reports of the TD4 being under powered? would it be worth getting the thing remapped ??

when you say the V6 is to quick in acceleration or top end?
