View Full Version : Loose Serpentine Belt on Disco 200 TDI?

Hi all,

Got a few symptoms on my diesel disco 200 tdi - on a J Plate.

1. Despite having a new battery a couple of weeks ago, the batt light on the dash comes on longer-than-normal on turning on.
--Alternator not charging due to loose belt?

2. Slight delay (< 1/2 second) between revving engine and speedo needle catching up (in neutral).
--Belt for speedo sensor loose?

3. Power steering heavy nearing full l/r lock - fluid levels ok.
--Lose belt?

Also - dont think this is connected tho, when revving - again in neautral - when coming off gas , just before the revs hit idle speed, it seems there a "lump" in the deceleration of the revs, choking what ever.

This is my first Landy, building my confidence with the mechanical nuances of owning an old one - so any advice from you seasoned Landy owners on here would be very greatfuly apreciated!

Thanks... :)

The rev counter is driven off the alternator, all the symptoms are of a loose belt.

You don't have a serpentine belt on a 200, it has 2 Vee belts.

Cheers Chris, thought as much...

Does this also account for the "lumpy" rev deceleration issue though - seems a little like a stall / splutter just above the idle point?

Also, are all these items driven off the same belt - might they both need adjusting / replacing, or is it just one that would account for these?

Sorry if this is a case of "RTF Haines!", but any help from you long-term pro's is very much apreciated! :)

One belt drives the PAS pump on it's own.
The second belt is for alternator and water pump. Each belt has it's own tensioner. 1/2 Square drive for the PAS belt On the mounting plate itself), and a slide adjuster by the alternator (13mm spanners) for the other belt.

Morning all,

Firstly, thanks to Les for that info and pics - really usefull!

OK, ordered the two belts (PAS and Alt), fitted the alt the other day (in the freezing cold... ;) ), but they seem to have sent the wrong belt for the PAS?

BTW - couldnt work out how the fan came off - so had to both "jigger" and "poke" around behind it to fit the alt belt, would have been a lot simpler if i could have got the fan off!

Now, the belt theyve sent for the PAS is only about an inch longer than the Alt belt. I'm comparing the new PAS belt (that I havent fitted) with the old Alt belt I took off. I know there'll be some stretching on the alt belt, but even against the new Alt belt before I fitted it, there was a simmilar amount of difference.

When I took the old PAS belt off, it seemed a good 4-5" longer than the one they've supplied...Again, I know there'll be some stretch on an old belt, but this much???

Unless someone here can confirm this is infact correct, I'll get on and order a new belt for the PAS.

FYI, part details of the ones they delivered below:

Both are BEARMACH branded, and the part numbers appear to be ETC7469 and ETC5815 if anyone is familliar with those.

The PAS belt is considerably smaller than the Alt belt. If they are similar sizes, then you have a wrong one.

My Disco 200 Tdi is on a J plate and dosn't have Air Conditioning. The ETC7469 is the Alternator belt. The PAS belt should be ERR810. The belt ETC 5815 is the wrong belt.

The fan unscrews by turning it clockwise, oposite way to unscrewing most things!

Wow! Two helpful responces in a few minutes!

Of course, you guys were right - the PAS belt was actually for a DEFENDER 200 tdi....

Confirmed this with the seller, and he's happy to swap... sorted!

Strewth - an excercise in make a simple job look difficult?!!
Hey, it's all a learning process, my sincere thanks to everyone for their valued input! :)
