best way to decide is to drive one.

I've not had a series, but have had 3 defenders and 1 disco

the discos are super comfy and quiet (compared to the defender) but I never really got to grips with it. They are easier to drive than a defender (and probaly a series). they do leak though, in the tradition of all landies :). Theres not a lot of boot space either, again, compared to the 110:D

I prefer the defender, I know I can hit it with heavy things, and it doesn't matter!

They are very different vehicles. You can pick up Discoverys very cheap now, quite a few need a lot of work though.

If you want comfort, then a Series is not for you.

I had my 2a for a few years, put a V8 in it in about 1982 when I started work on the RAC. A great truck, very heavy on fuel, but I wouldn't get another, I'm too old now. :)

If you are not in any particular hurry, find one with a 2.2 BMC Diesel engine, other wise a 2.25 Diesel and a good tail wind....

They are very dated, but that is why the Lads like them.

Discovery or Series:
No comparisions really, both carry the LR badge and that's about it.
The Discovery is a comfortable family car with about a 75% of the off road capability of a Defender 90, the Series is not.
What you go for very much depends on your requirements. I drive my Discovery through France at 70mph plus, then it goes off road around the sand dunes of the Sahara Desert, then back through France. The Series will do all of this, just not the same comfort, or speed.
For pottering around locally the Series would be great, and fun, for the long motorway runs, the Discovery will eat them up.

Totally agree with a couple of the above.

Disco is more geared towards "normal" use with offroad capability. The Defender is more geared to being a workhorse that can be used "normally".

This weekend we have had 5 kids plus 2 adults in the Disco for about 1.5 hours drive with no problems.

you need to think about what you intend to do with the vehicle. If it's going to be a family car or you are going to do long distances on road then a Disco is a better bet.
