is this realy going to happen or has he realised that there would be more cars on the road without road tax ???? this is from the pre budget report

Green taxes
Plans for the owners of polluting cars to pay more are off until 2010, and increases for the worst polluters have been capped at £30.

what do you think

I wouldn't say that a Land Rover / Range Rover on LPG was a polluter yet we still have to pay top whack:(

So what's the fuel and tax set-up like in France? I think it's a real rip-off in UK. Day was you looked forward to getting a better car without being penalised in every way, not much wonder the British car industry collapsed. Now they even hype the tax on older vehicles. State of road up here in Scotland, you need four wheel drive to cope with the potholes and the lack of gritting in winter.

In France the setup is as follows:

1. When you buy a new vehicle, there is a pollution-rated element of purchase tax. There is a nil rate band in the middle, below that a series of bands where you get money back for the less polluters, and a series of bands above where there are levels of additional tax depending on the cars pollution output.

2. For everyone running a car of any kind - THERE IS NO ROAD TAX !!!!!!!

3. Diesl costs today - about 1.08 euros per litre

Hope that helps. Incidently we live in the country and have two Discos, can't imagine that being possible in the UK !!!

Oh and just to add salt in the wounds, for motorbikes, no road tax and no MOT.

Cheers

Dave
