Weird, if you open up the dash under the steering wheel, all the fuses on on the left hand side, under the steering.
I'm not techy but are there multi plugs which go from these banks of fuses to the various lights and so on, would one have un-clipped? given so much is out, sounds plausible!

Good luck

good idea. Ill have a look. Im really stupid when it comes to electrics... people ive asked seem to say it could be a relay or something... i have no clue.. was hoping someone on here had experienced the same thing and knew how to fix it!

oh for anyone wondering sorry forgot to say its a 1998 300 tdi.

ok i found it.

Thanks Jules for the suggestion too.

Turns out the fusebox under the bonnet was faulty.

Took it out and cleaned the metal plates, which looked fine!!

Found it by putting a live from battery to the live feed on the box, which made no difference, but put to any of the fuses themselves made everything work. Was the live in to the first fuse in the row somewhere.

Hopefully this will help someone else in the future because it took a couple of hours of head scratchin to find.
