I take it you stopped when this happened?
Did it drive normally once you let it cool down?
How long has this whiny noise from the gear box been there?

What does the clutch pedal feel like?
If the clutch friction lining has worn away and it has been slipping against the flywheel, that would cause a massive heat build up and give loss of power symptoms.

Sounds like the clutch has worn away then, sometimes they smell like hot brakes when they get worn.
It would be worth checking the clutch fluid level just in case its a stuck slave cylinder or something.
Did you get recovered to a garage?
