View Full Version : what do you reckon sudden die
Discovery TD5 2001 diesel
went for a 10minute drive then stopped walked the dog for 30 minutes started ok drove for 10minutes stopped realised we had forgotten something went for a 10minute drive didnt stop kept engine running then started back now at this stage the fuel is real low the light hasnt come on but it will soon on the way back we drive over a silent policeman (you know the traffic calmers ) and the engine cuts out I try to restart it and it nearly wants to but doesnt leave it for awhile then try again turning over fine just not fireing eventually call the aa and get towed home Any Ideas?
There's a fuel cut off switch on engine side of the front bulkhead - might have been triggered by your road humps. I think you just have to press them to reset. Otherwise - can you hear the fuel pump running when you turn on the ignition? Good luck Jon

COuld be out of diesel I guess? Low level in the tank and it could have gulped up a load of air as you hit the speed hump. This could result in an air lock. Check the fuel filter and see if theres any ful in it :)
this seriously is one of the best forums for useful responses Thanks guys
Unfortunately its the middle of the night here in NZ so I will check those ideas out tomorrow Not knowing much about diesels if i remove the fuel filter will I have to bleed the system afterwards?

Yes...ideally. They dont really like running on air, and if there is a lot of it in there it will damage your injectors.
A lot of newer vehicles will self prime though, so best to check for sure in the owners manual if you have one. I'm more used to older vehicles myself!

Not done anything on a TD5. But this is the procedure I followed when my mate got water in his 300TDI fuel line.
Unscrew fuel filter
Empty contents into a coke bottle and check for contamination
Refit empty Fuel filter
Prime fuel system with the manual lever on the lift pump
Slacken the injectors and turn it over to expel any more water/air
Tighten injectors and she fired right up..
No more problems all day :) This was in the middle of a field, hence the coke bottle :)
well removed the fuel filter and that waqs full of good clean fuel I put 5 litres of fuel i n the tank just in case and went through the start up procedure several times and nothing

Have you tryed pushing the fuel reset under the bonnet ? does the fuel pump hum ? you should here it inside the back door about a foot in !
I prseume you mean the kill switch or is there another button? no hum from inside rear as i say i emptied the fuel filter then put back on there was no sound of pumping or wherring i wonder if a lead has come of the fuel pump thats under the rear floor right?
The switch I mentioned is in the engine bay infront of the passenger (in a rh drive car). It's an inertia switch meant to turn the fuel pump off if you're in a shunt.
You should be able to hear the pump running when you turn the ignition on, especially if you are beside the wheel arch where the fuel filter lives. However, there is a timer which turns the pump off after a couple of minutes if you haven't cranked the engine.
May be worth checking the relays are all seated properly as well before trying to get at the fuel pump!
Good luck,
Jon

I'd go with the reset switch in the engine bay, read the owners handbook it tells you how to locate and reset it there. There are also instructions on how to bleed the fuel system in the owners handbook. As said switch on the ignition switch to position "2" and listen near the fuel tank you should hear a humming noise which is the fuel pump.
Tom
Ok
so there is no humming sound at rear
the relays you talk of they are under the bonnet left hand side as you look at the truck?
sorry forgot
I have pressed the reset button and i have gone through the bleed syestem several times with no luck

When my pump gave up the ghost I tested it direct from the battery - lift the rear carpet and you will find the hatch directly above the pump - half dozen screws give you access -- on top of the pump is a 4 pin multi plug -- you want the 2 opposing corners top left and bottom right - the only problem is you will have to cobble together 2 little connections -- I used straight through crimps for connecting 2 wires together and tightened them round with pliers - run 2 wires out round to the battery with a couple of small gator clips and hey presto your there !
"the relays you talk of they are under the bonnet left hand side as you look at the truck?" Correct - if you're standing in front of the car wondering wtf to try next! Jon

to prime the filter after changing on a Td5 turn the ignition on pump the accelerator pedal 5 times and the pump should start to run and the ECU light on the dash should flash. try that
well guys an gals it was apparently the fuel pump so I believe about $1500 my share was $380 insurance paid the balance and we are back on the road. Thanks for all the suggestions and comments By the way the fuel pump here in NZ was $890 whats the price in UK?

Hi loosen bleed screw on top of fuel filter use the manual lever on lift pump until your sure all air is out then tighten bleed screw back up. loosen injector pipes on each injector a small amount a think half a turn would do then turn engine over a few times and have a look if any fuel is leaking from the pipes if it is tighten them all back up and try starting.repeat if it doesnt start until all air is out obviously if no fuel is leaking from pipes it will mean you are not getting fuel through.
