View Full Version : A dumb question regards 4WD

I have just purchased a 2001 V8 discovery II. Making the move from the Shogun world.

I am sure a few of you will muster a smile or two at the following.

A particularly stupid question though: Is the Discovery permanant 4WD? And if so where should the transfer box lever be for normal road use? I have it now in H, tried it in Neutral and nothing happens when I lIft the clutch so guessing (if working) it needs to be in Low or High.

Basicly can some one tell me the correct on and off road settings? It has a owners manual, however strangly or coincidently the transfer lever section is missing.

Many thanks in anticipation.

if its like d1 which i suspect is the case yes its permanant 4wd meaning one of the four wheels has drive without difflock.

hi/low is just different gear ratios.

with difflock engaged one front and one rear wheel must turn.

on transfer lever back right is for road use. its hi box no difflock.

most offroading is forward left, low box with difflock on.

you can have hi gear with difflock (for getting home having broke a halfshaft lol) and low box without difflock (maybe for towing up a steep hill or something)

dont use difflock on road usually.

left engages difflock and a light comes on dash.

Thats all on d1 not sure if its same on d2 but i think it will be.

does it move right/left? if so then its the same (thats difflock).

Yes, as said, it is permanent 4wd.

Some boxes have a diff lock, that is marked on the small stick, move it left.

Some have a viscous coupling to lock the drive when the wheels spin, that just has H N L.
