My dad wants a new radio for his Christmas, And I was thinking about getting either an internet radio or a DAB radio. Does anyone know which is better, as I heard a few months ago that the technology used with the DAB radio's might be changing to accept even more channels, so the radio that I get now might not work in 2 years time.

Thanks for your help.

I have a dab and to be honest i use it in fm mode a lot as it looses the dab signal easy,if ya walk past it it looses what your listening to,that may just be this model ,as its only a little tranny radio this may be the prob.

DAB coverage is very poor and the current technology is likely to die a death.

Roberts make a DAB radio with internet radio built in:

http://www.robertsradio.co.uk/Products/Internet_radios/STREAM_202/index.htm

Which is quite good.

We've had no ill reports with regards to coverage at the shop, it's a bit like Freeview, most will get it - some won't.

As for DAB+ we've not heard anything about it happening anytime soon, if at all. I know there's at least one crazy person on the web who's slamming DAB on his website, but I've found it quite good.

Internet radio may eat a hole in your download allocation if it is a bit small.
I haven't used a conventional radio at home for a few years as I use the cable tv channels and an amp.

I have a DAB head unit in my 90 and a few in different rooms at home and like previously stated when the reception goes ........it really goes its a shame it hasnt taken off as the sound quality is better and i do like Plant Rock. Internet radios rely on downloading data ?....is that right so would that not take up any allowance you may have ?

I have a DAB in the bedroom, bathroom & kitchen. Great reception, and they don't affect my sleeping dumping or cooking;);)

No, Steve,
Just that over here DAB works very well due to govt. backing and is not too dear to buy:)

I have one in mine - it's the business for listening to Radio Five Live when the footie's on. You can also use it to play your iPod through your car stereo, and listen to it elsewhere with headphones. Reception is generally excellent. :)

Right or wrong, the Norwegian govt. meant that it was worth investing in, and now, despite experts saying it's gonna do an 8 track, they are contractually committed, so only good news for us consumers:)

How would the internet radio eat into you allocated internet usage, I thought it was like listening to the radio on the internet, obviously using the radio for a few hours a day wouldn't use up too much of the allocated internet usage, or am I missing something here?

yes, uses your bandwidth and data allowance. How significant that is depends on your service. I think data rates on the beeb go up to 125kb/s
