View Full Version : Best Sat Nav & OS mapping systems?

Hi,
Anyone got a view on the best way to combine Sat Nav with OS mapping for the on road vs off road, laning ability?
I have seen quite a smart system from Roadangel, the Adnventurer 7000 but i think you had to then buy lots of SD maps.. at about £200!
Is there a system that includes sufficient scale to cover the whole UK from a SAT NAV and OS perspective?
I am starting to do some local laning and feel this would be a very useful device.. as I plan to start heading off to Wales and Scotland as well.
Any views appreciated.

anybody tried memory map is it any good is there a cheap way of getting it ;) can it be linked to sat nav on a lap top like autoroute can
Memory map can be run on a lap top.... as far as im aware though memory map isnt much use for on road voice navigation, ie there is no voice direction given, you need to either visually watch the map or set waypoints on it, which means you need to habe a good idea of where you are going in the first place... although it is excellant for lanning, linked with gps you get a real time gps monicle showin your position, and you can choose to have extra box's open giving you your current nat grid location or long and lat locations.
Also it automatically saves the toute you have just driven....
I use mem map for off road and have pc navigator for on road use, but they are running from a purpose built car pc with 7" touch screen mounted to dash...

A Sat Nav shews you where you are.
A paper map shews you how to get there.
Have tried over many times different systems and no one system is idea, the problem is esp parts of wales are lots of little minor roads leading to the lanes, often people get lost on these than the lanes themselves.
So planing and following a route can be a nightmare even a excellent map reader as a passenger can get lost in the dark with no signs and tall hedges, esp if you cross major roads and just stick to the minor ones.
So I find POI's start and finish the best for the road use, then MM while on the lane itself and for route planning,

And Memory Map on a gps enabled device does both without the hassle of trying to read a map and drive at the same time.

So MM had detailed Go to instructions and a map that has the whole overview all easily visable ?
I take it I can put a full OS map reference into MM. Then say "Go to" and it will give full voice instructions including all white roads.
I'm not saying MM isn't good. It is. However for the way I like to use things it like all GPS systems tells you where you are. Not where you are going.
I take it also it can replace a navigator who can read an OS map on the detailed state of the roads that come over like pace notes ?
ps I would have expected to have recieved six of the best on both hands from Miss Fox me English teacher for starting a sentence with "and" :D :D:eek:

No but then I never found a paper map that would do that either. What it will do is give you the section of the OS map for the area that you are in. You can lock onto the gps position and it will scroll the map automatically Saves having to fold and refold as you move along. It will give you heading and direction of travel as a real compass would. I hardly ever have a passenger. Been a bit of a billy no mates, a navigator is something I've never had the luxury of.
My PDA also has Tomtom for directions which does give voice instructions but I always try to have a paper atlas as I don't completely trust satnav software. MM is not satnav. As you say it does not direct you as tomtom would what it is, is a digital OS map linked to a GPS. It proved it's worth on Salisbury Plain last weekend when despite having several people with paper maps no one could agree on exactly where we were or where we needed to go. a quick look at MM gave a grid ref and a visual position confirmation on the map. Once confirmed we were then able to continue on our way.

Sorry too much time on LandyZone

Connect your 276c (with automotive feature) to a device displaying Memory Map and you can Mike. ;)

How please...I'd still like to know how to get my track log off :D :D
I'm waiting for my computer to be made. Then I can spend some time with MM. I didn't have enough time before I went away last time.
redhand.
I still use a GPS to shew me/us where we are.
I still prefere Margaret to use the map(s) to shew us where to go.

mmm can this be done using a pc aswell or only a pda?
Cheers
AJ
How please...If you have the automotive feature and kit that will give you turn by turn voice and displayed instructions on your 276c just plug it into whatever you have running MM via USB and you'll have a more detailed view of your position and track. I link either my 276c or 60CSx into my Samsung Q1 computer that has a decent 7" or 8" screen so don't even bother looking at the GPS display. If you have Garmin UK Topography software on your GPS it'll even guide you along most lanes too.
I've tried GPS cards in the Q1 but they don't process as fast as a decent GPS unit and have found they're always approximately 100 - 200m behind where you are when moving at speed.
I'd still like to know how to get my track log off :D :D:D Go to Main Menu and scroll down the left hand side to Track. Scroll right to Active. Scroll down to Record Mode. Press Enter. Select Off.
I still prefere Margaret to use the map(s) to shew us where to go. If I had a decent navigator there'd be no need for my gadgets ....... or maybe not. :D

CheersMy only experience is with a PC but I should imagine that if you have connectivity between the two (USB or otherwise) it should be possible Luke.

AJ. No not that.
Off the Garmin to the computer to make new roads.....
I'd like to put the A1M through Yorkshire onto my Garmin maps and stop Bitching Betty getting upset when I don't follow her instructions.
I think a weekend together to help each other sort out thse funny gadgets would help all of us.

Memory map works very well and is user friendly. I use it for Off Road Marshalling and run it through a Samsung Q1 and Bluetooth GPS unit as well as through a Garmin 60. Both work well but sometime the Q1 looses bluetooth connection whereas the garmin can be used via a lead. I have a Ram mount for the samsung that sticks to the window and its fine... even off road.
Have also used SATMap but this is a very expensive option once you buy all the kit and the sd Maps.

for anyone who might be interested in the road angel system, this is how you turn a navigator into an adventurer.
these maps work on road angel navigator
http://rapidshare.com/users/USAQRH
you first must down load and install this (providing your navigator isnt already loaded with memory map)
this will update the navigator to adventurer status, only download the core files then press update.
http://www.blackspot.com/support/navigator7000/adventurer7000.html
and if you run vista you need this so your pc will connect/sync with a pda.
download this first.

hope this is of use guys. ive just got mine running memory map and its looking good so far.

Evenning,
Yes i use "PC Navigator" for on road voice navigation from adress to adress etc like tom tom etc..
and i also run memory map for lanning,
In each of these programes you have to go into the setting and direct the prgrame to the com port that has the gps receiver plugged into it, or in my case the com with the bluetooth dongle, as my gps is a tom tom bluetooth one.

Do a search for GPSGate. it allows several programs to use the same GPS port simultaneously and without any conflicts or sharing issues and once set up requires almost no input from the user.

Yes i have had GPS gat on my PDA, but after a holiday it went flat and lost all its programes, and i tried to reload it form the net, but i had to pay again for it, so never bothered,,,
but have been contemplating it for ease of running two nav programes, also whne i had tomtom software intalled on my PDA, tom tom software is reknowned for locking out the gps com port so othre programes cannot use it! and gps gate resoved this problem.

Ive found GPS gate to be less than 100% reliable. I use it but to be honest there's not much need for it.
PC Navigator gets you to an address.
Memory map shows you where you are.
As for the Garmin software. Better off not using it unless your using it to run T4A etc, PC Navigator in the UK & Europe is MUCH better.
I cant really think of a time when you need both running at once and thus need to share the GPS.
