Options obviously, are drive through France, or take ferry to Northern Spain.

I guess that if you have 3 weeks you could well drive France and make that a part of the holiday. I guess the drive from Wales to Dover is reasonably easy, M4, M25, M20 (wow that's 263 miles and 4 hours driving and £48 in Diesel). Ferry to France (Sea France £35 each way at the right time of day).
France, loads of camping, cheap hotels and places to stop and in June the roads will be quick, don't forget the tolls though.

A good purchase would be a copy of Autoroute Express, only around £50 and you can try all sort of combinations of route.

Have a look on my website on the links page, and for that matter the prepping too, but in all honesty all you need to do is put the fuel in and go.

In Spain we stayed in Llanca, Costa Brava, rented through Interhome, went to the Albera Mountains and played a little, some good tracks but nothing too challenging.

Hi,
Just found this on another site;

We went on the Oct 07 Morocco trip, having been on the Bilbao to Portsmouth ferry the year before on heavy seas we were not going to put our stomachs thru that again,
We booked a cabin on the Portsmouth to Le Havre night ferry, arrived fresh in France early morning and headed south, refuelled three times, great roads with good sevice facilities, arrived Bilbao that evening and stayed in the Novatel at Barakala, next day early start headed south again, down thru the centre of Spain another full on days driving refuelling, service food and loos, but worth it , scenery and views all part of the trip, getting round Madrid takes some care as there are encampments of undesirables under bridges and on motorway embankments, just keep going dont stop.
When we were near to the southern coast of Spain we met another two landys who were on the same trip, this is when you need your CB, two long but enjoyable days driving arriving same time as those who had chosen the ferry.
When you arrive at Estopona the best place to stay is the Estopona Palace, and on your way back when the trip is over.

Toppa,
Sea France
Depart 16/12/08 07.15 Dover - Calais £40

Return 30/12/08 19.00 Calais - Dover £40

If you travel earlier, out, and later, back, it is only £25 each way.

......And he's not going until June.

Not that I want you out of the country, or anything lol

I took in Spain on the way to Morocco earlier this year, absolutely stunning. Took ferry from Portsmouth to Bilbao - not a bad crossing but I have heard it can be rough. We tracked through Bourgos to P.natural del canon del rio lobos - spectacular canyons - to a fantastic place called rollamienta. then up into sierra del Demanda On to Alberricin - awsome driving & history, and food, and culture and so on.

We carried on to see some friends in Ulela Del Campo which took in Valencia, but to be honest if it weren't for seeing our friends we would have been happy to stay in the mountains in the north - it was chilly up there but beautiful.

After Ulela, we went back inland to Grenada and the sierra nevada which was a bit more like it.

On our way back up we drove through the west, past cordoba etc, not as interesting in my book but still very nice.

Good luck with your trip - don't put it off! I have just got the maps out to check our route & I am feeling that hankering again!

Its been said earlier just fuel up and go...

Almost!

Probably goes without saying but give your car the once over before you set off. If in doubt, or if its about due, service it or get it serviced.

Then fuel up and go!

For a general holiday with nothing too challenging I personally would take a hand held GPS unit (because Ive got one in a drawer) and a good, big scale Michelin road atlas. If you decide to do a bit of laning while your there, buy the relevant 1:50k / 1:25k IGN map. With the hand held gps you can determine exactly where you are and thus where you need to go.

For this type of trip it needn't be expensive. Preparation & common sense are the key's.

We've done the UK/Spain trip a few times, and used most of the ferry crossings too.

Camped and stayed in cheap accommodation in France and Spain.

If you let us know what you are interested in, and where you are interested in going, happy to share any information we can. Send us an email.

....Plymouth Sanatander is a fast boat..saves driving too far down thru Franceif you don`t want that....get as far as the Pyrenean mountains....then the Bardenas Desert..try wikepedia for a wee peep...good campsite close to me at www.oela.net It has a lake sandy lifeguarded beach, which is of course topless for the perves out there lol also with a great rest` serving good food and surrounding by forest with walks...

For other good info en route try using www.viamichelin.com (http://www.viamichelin.com) and typein the places you want to go in Driving Directions in the homepage...you`ll get spin off links showing places to eat etc. A good thing about this site is the drive times are fairly accurate..

Anybody fancying Spain might find this website handy Wikiloc (http://www.wikiloc.com/wikiloc/search.do?all=yes&from=0&to=50&res=on&activity=off%20road&pictogram=3&country=ES&near=Spain) There are lots of routes in Spain and they are in a variety of languages but as they have maps that you can download and an overview in English they should be accessible to most.

My partner put that up on another forum

Regards
