My "new" 300tdi feels really underpowered. Its already had the EGR blank fitted, but still feels much less powerful than my old 200tdi (ie at least 1 gear lower to get up a hill)

Also, on these cold mornings, it strggles to start and also struggles to accelerate for the first minute or two. Any suggestions what might be wrong?

as for the power im not to sure but could be the gearing of your motor.

as for starting i take it the engine still turns over the same as it always has?

i would guess your glowplugs are old try replaceing them you can get them on ebay for £13 inc postage, if you look in the manual book and it will tell you the info you want to know to test them, but for £13 what the point.

do you alow the glowplugs to do there thing not trying to offend you, have you tryed to alow the glowplus to do there thing twice over then turn the engine over (a sighn of old glow plugs)

when fitting your new glow plugs lube the threads up with some copper grease to help ease them out next time you change them.

check the air filter is not clogged on the underside or wet as this dont help with starting.

when was your filters done and how many miles. i ask this as i get a 300tdi in oct and had starting probs with no history and the air was thik with crud on the under side and the oil was like poridge, i changed them and it starts way easyer, dont know bout fule filter as its sealed.

is the fule lift pump worn? could be you may need a new one as it dont pump to well or is alowing the fule to run back toward the tank thus needing time to be drawn back up the pipes or a small hole/loose coupleing on a pipe alowing the fule to go back towards the tank.

a bit more info on it takeing longer to fire would help us to help you

i hope this helps a bit
cheers baz

Thanks for your reply.

Yes, I do allow the glow plugs to heat up properly and will try doing it twice to see what happens.

Air filter is clean - havent looked at fuel filter but i havea service receipt for about 5 months ago saying it was replaced.

Fuel pump did cross my mind as i was told that might also be affecting performance.

Basically it is almost as if it has a flat battery - it struggles to start but does start. But the battery is fine and starts my 200tdi with no trouble at all.

4 things to look at:-

1 engine earthing, Try reading this

2 Check your starter brushes

3 Clean out the fuel sedimentor

4 Give the fuel a good couple of doses of injector cleaner

hopefully will improve things

is it an EDC model or standard? What age is it? Manual or Auto?

I used to park mine on a sloped drive, after starting it wouldn't drive up the slope for the first 30 seconds, I had to leave it to warm up. No idea why it wasn't like it was struggling - more like it was ignoring me. Mine was the EDC (Electronic Diesel Control) So it's quite possible it could ignore heavy loads until up to a certain temp?

Hi, I cleaned my intercooler at the time I blanked off the Egr and the pick up in power was brill. Check to see if your intercooler is gunked up as this won't allow the engine to breathe properly.

In recent years, with my 300tdi I have had two problems that cause loss of power at starting & on a hill
- a turbo/intercooer hose splitting - it can first go inside the hose - check these are firm and in good condition.
- the small rubber hose (about 8mm dia) between turbo wastegate and inlet manifold was cracked and leaking.

In both cases the engine ran fine, but just with 30% less power - it was only really evident on hills. These types of leaks are hard to see without the engine running - rev the engine and all the turbo hoses should go hard under the pressure. Listen for escaping air.

Bit of heat, plenty of release oil or new starter.
