Afternoon troops
We have a "ticking" noise that sounds like its coming from the top of the engine on our 300Tdi 95 plate disco. Ive searched the forums and found out a few other things it might be so im going to start at the top and work down:eek::eek::eek:
Could someone please tell me what the clerance should be? is it .008 or am i way off the mark
Thanks for your help

what gear box do you have? manual or auto?
if its an auto it could be the torque converter i have the same problem in an old fire engine not sure what it is gone or going inside it but that makes a ticking noise when in drive but once you get upto cruseing speed the noise almost goes.
i cant see it being the rockers as it would do it all the time it will change tones with the revs but always be there.
could be a worn head on the vacume pump or a bearing on a pully or water pump going, but again my experience is they change tones with the revs but the noise dont realy go away, but none the less worth a check
To get an idea where the noise is comeing from use a long pice of bar and place it on a NON Moveing item of the component while the engine is running and stick your ear to it (put something sligntley soft on the end so it wont hurt your ear) and listen to that component you will here the nose with the faulty part if it not faulty you will here the bearing spining or the engine thumping if you cant here the ticking move on to the next item.
Safty 1st: dont put the bar into your ear rest it against your ear, never put it onto moveing components as you will injur your self or the engine.
hope this helps you
cheers baz

Often caused by the valve stem caps breaking up,you only hear it at low revs or on overrun as there is too much other row going on.The valve clearance is .008".

Sounds similar. My 300tdi (manual) also has a little ticking noise when accelerating and at very high speed. I think the noise is not from the rockers, because I can hear it at high revs. I suppose it could be the vacuum pump (it was leaking, I repaired it), or something else. Anyway - a good noise will show itself at some time :)

Im now thinking its something to do with the fuel pump. no noise on tickover only when accelerating stops when i dip the clutch and once i reach ramming speed it stops also
