View Full Version : Starting tractor?

John Deere 1640, turning the key brings up the ignition lights etc, and a buzzer (I think cos the lights are on) but can't seem to get it into a position to actually turn the engine over. Is there a separate start button? Has been running recently, no known faults, and there is diesel in the tank.

ANy ideas, please? :D

Not in gear or something daft like that?

Make sure all the levers are in neutral, i know some tractors need this to start.

Well I wondered if there may be some sort of interlock, there are so many knobs and levers, how do I work out if it is in gear??

Most tractors you have to have out of gear and the clutch pedal depressed to start. I think JD have this safety system.

I dont know the model but a google search showed up a fairly old tractor with full cab... I would imagine it wont start untill its in neutral, the proper gear lever and the hi/low lever. I would imagine there are two in between your knees. Its them.

:confused:Thanks guys, yep that's the exact one ... there's a hare/tortoise lever on the left, and a gear lever on the right ... I'm assumin pedal on left is clutch, then brake / throttle on right like a car? The gear lever just goes up and down like a motoribke lever? how do I get neutral? Sorry for thikc questions, it's a long story

Our CASE tractors need the clutch pedal down to start. Had a few problems witht the switch on the pedal - build up of crud. Good clean and it was fine again.

Just another thought......
It might have a pull to stop lever. If so then make sure its in or it wont fire, and also this might prevent you coming back asking how to turn it off!

Ex-wife's just split with her partner, he never showed her how to use all the farm stuff before he left (well, I should say, before the police removed him  ). Now my partner's worried we'll get back together ... NO WAY!!!
