View Full Version : Big vibration in the cabin
At 30-50 mph,I get big vibration in my disco,I just got my frony 2 tyres balanced & was thinking they got the balancing wrong.the last time I put new tyres on I got them balanced in the same shop & got the same vibrations then.I just put up with it,it seems to av got worse! Any speed between 10 mph-30 is fine & 60 - 70. 30-60 is real bad,the cubby box shakes & the steering wheel.thanks in advance guys.

That's the speed for wheel balancing, the mirrors shake as well.
They are big wheels and do take a lot of weight, depending on the tyre make and if the rims are Alloys. We have fitted as much as 80 grams on one place on a Budget tyre. Another won't need any.
Have they actually put any weights on?
Chris
Not sure if they put weights on, I saw them put it into a machine & that was it!they are freestyle alloys 16"255/65/ tyres
Finally got the disco running smooth again, had the front wheels balanced last Monday & weren't happy with it. Took it to another garage after work & 1 wheel was 40 grammes out & the other 30. needless to say I won't be going back to the 1st garage

Hi.
Check front prop shaft, I had to replace mine as (what they call a Hooks joint had gone) it`s not your usuall UJ
Back to square 1, driving to work this morning & the big vibrations are back. Its been balanced twice in 2 wks so I'm ruling that out. classicman did you have the same symptoms ? If I'm free wheeling at 50 mph there's no shakes but as soon as I put my foot down its back

thomo ive had them symptoms where it vibrates and stops when i lift off the gas.
It stopped when my prop fell off due to the rubber coupling failing.
I put on a 200 setup with a UJ instead and its lovely and smooth now. If its a 300 check that rubber coupling. Or as the classic man says check the front prop.
Got under the disco earlier and gave the prop a good shake, the only thing that stood out was that ,at the end of the prop, not sure if its supposed to do this but I could move it side to side.

the uj is the x shape thing.. is there play in it?
Seems pretty tight in the uj,the opposite end I noticed 1of the 4 nuts is loose. Would that make it shake. Also when I was turning the prop by Hand(should I be able to do that) I noticed on the uj side a slight step in the twisting movement ?

Hi .
Sorry I did not get back to you sooner been very busy.
Answer to your question is yes the viration di dgo away when I came of the gas. It then became noisey, but this was the front prop rear joint.
There are 3 UJs on this shaft 1 at the front and 2 at the rear, it was the middle one that was at fault replaced the whole shaft.
Try Paddocks LR spares at Matlock Bath, alot cheaper that going to LR.

I know it's a very different car but my Nissan 300ZX TT had a worn prop shaft centre support bearing that wore out and gave exactly the same symtoms you're getting.
It holds the 2 prop halves in position.
Not sure if there's a similar bearing on the Land Rovers?
I think the way to check was to put it in neutral when it's vibrating and if it goes away then it's got to be the prop. I think that's the way it worked anyway...
If it's still vibrating then it must be the wheels as they are still spinning when drive is disconnected.
on the way home from work today when there was an almighty bang under the disco, put her up on to a grass verge as I was on a busy road. Looked underneath & the prop was hanging down from the gearbox side.got the recovery out & boy did he have a job getting it on to the back. For some reason the wheels go back but won't roll forward ,so you can imagine the trouble he Had winching that heavy old truck.
