This morning I had a problem with the steering lock. The key was stuck and the steering jammed. Eventually I managed the free the lock using a fine lubricant (similar to WD40).

The vehicle is Discovery TD5 2001

I had the same problem a year ago and took the car to a locksmith who cleaned the lock and removed a small metal ball which was the cause of the problem as it was stuck and would not allow the key in.

What might be the cause of this problem and what preventive care should be used to refrain form this happening again?

Thanks,

Nathan

The small ball should run up a little cut out, then don't when they dry out, that's why he took it out.

It's drying out again. The key moves little plates ( tumblers) up or down, one will be sticking, that's why it won't turn. WD40, move the key in and out for a while, that usually frees the tumblers.

Thanks for the answer.

Does this mean I should oil the lock several times a year like the rest of the locks in the Disco?

No, you should not oil as this will dry out and leave a sticky residue in the lock barrel (just look at the oil stains on your door locks). Use graphite power get it from a locksmiths and put it on your key then insert it into the barrel.

Oil also runs into the ignition switch and gums up the contacts, it can set fire as well. The RAC issued a special notice about Patrolmen not using oil in ignition barrels.

Wd40 or Duckoil will flush and clean out the grey muck that jams the tumblers. The aim is more to clean than lubricate.
